ISO Italianate Grey Brownstone Fireplace Surround

I am looking for the classic Brooklyn fireplace for a room which was redone in Brady Bunch style in the 1970s. Have been trying to piece by piece restore house in homage to what it was. Any leads appreciated. [A4C7DB72-7BB6-4804-B1C1-EA43C9DE28FB_4_5005_c](//muut.com/u/brownstoner/s1/:brownstoner:bAgR:a4c7db727bb64804b1c1ea43c9de28fb_4_5005_c.jpeg.jpg)

Adding two photos of mantels that John Malli cleaned and installed for me, plus two photos of a disassembled mantel pre-assembly… [IMG_7184](//muut.com/u/brownstoner/s3/:brownstoner:5XPf:img_7184.jpeg.jpg) [IMG_1736](//muut.com/u/brownstoner/s3/:brownstoner:7hDa:img_1736.jpeg.jpg) [IMG_1985](//muut.com/u/brownstoner/s3/:brownstoner:PVCN:img_1985.jpeg.jpg)

So, old marble mantel restoration has become a mild hobby of mine, and I’ve got a few tips. Your best bet for a sub-$1000 mantel will be Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, and eBay (as long as you keep the search within a reasonable radius).

About three years ago I bought two arched Italianate marble mantels with cast iron arches/summer covers from a woman who had removed them from her townhouse in Hoboken for something like $350 each. One was moderately ornate, while the other was much simpler. And just a few weeks ago I bought a third (and probably final) mantel from someone farther away in Jersey who had removed it from a 19th century addition to an 18th-century historic house for $500 (he had been asking $1000).

One major thing to consider is that in most online market cases, you’re going to end up getting the mantel in well over a dozen pieces, since they were originally installed and cemented together in situ. I found a very talented marble-cutter named John Malli at Foro Marble who’s quite adept at reassembling them over a custom-built wooden base that he builds, and who can securely attach the keystones and cast iron arches.

Now, if you buy them from some higher-end retailers like Olde Good Things (and don’t mind the weird cult connections), or even the Old Iron Architectural Salvage yard under the BQE near Lowe’s in Gowanus, they seem to have the mantels already assembled… but then it’s going to be tougher and more expensive to have it delivered.

Anyway, happy to weigh in more on this. But you may also want to confirm that an arched Italianate marble mantel would be appropriate to the time period of your building, since if it’s from the 1890s or later you could probably get away with a simpler-to-install wooden mantel. There’s some great info on the history of brownstone fireplaces and mantels here: https://www.brownstoner.com/architecture/fireplace-history-mantel-brooklyn-historic-interiors-interior-design-arts-and-crafts-victorian/
