ISO cast iron radiators, never painted - will cover removal from home

Dear neighbors,

We need to replace 2 radiators in our home with cast iron ones that have never had paint on them (either generic old fashioned or fancy type). I’m hoping that someone may have some in their basement which they want to get rid of and I can hire someone to do the heavy lifting and transport. Yes, we could buy some new ones, but they are charmless. Ideal size would be about 1.5-2′ W x 2′ T, possibly a bit larger, but we are flexible. These would be fitted for steam heat and we would ask you to vouch that your radiators have no leaks. Ultimately we would like to replace all our old radiators (5 more), but our current need is for 2.

Dear Ashton13 and Orrsuz, Thanks for your suggestions and offers. Orrsuz, I have written to you directly. Aston13, I will double check the pricing for the Victoria Parking at Park Slope Plumbing. Agreed they are attractive; another provider charges about $145/section, which can get pricey fast, but I will also take another look at the gov-free model. Every time I go to BIG, the iron “shop” under the subway is closed, but will try to check again now that the weather is improving – thanks!

The Governale Victoria model (http://governaleindustries.com/products/victoria/) is pretty old fashioned looking. Their Gov-free models are basic, but not necessarily charmless – and they put out a LOT of heat relative to their small footprint, and they’re pretty inexpensive. Park Slope Plumbing sells both – might be worth at least checking them out and comparing costs. I thought a lot about sourcing vintage radiators and restoring them for the seven we needed, but in the end it seemed like way too much trouble (and risk – it’s hard to know if the internal seals are messed up until you actually try them.

Did you check out NY Old Iron under the Smith+9th station when you were at BIG? They usually have a bunch.

Oh yeah? You lucked out.

There are also replicas of the old ornate type – maybe that’s what you bought. AFAIK radiators were always painted from the beginning. Bare cast iron isn’t particularly attractive especially if it gets wet.

As far as I can tell Governale (located in Brooklyn) is also a distributor for Burnham or rebrands their products under the Governale name.

Thanks PWNYC. I had contacted them before – they and most companies now charge $450/500 per radiator for cleaning and then painting again (plus delivery). Given our volume, that’s expensive.

Thanks No-permitz – I actually found one unpainted at BigReuse and bought it. Still hoping to find more…

Have you considered buying new radiators? They are still manufactured out of cast iron and in traditional shapes. Google “Burnham” or “Governale”. Much easier than sourcing old rads and having to sandblast them.
