ISO Antique cast iron rim locks

I need to replace some missing rim locks and i’d like to match what i already have on some doors. But my house had 5 inch high rim locks and they are hard to find on ebay, etsy etc. Did Brooklyn, in particular, have these unique sizes and are there any salvage stores in the area that might have this size? Thanks.

While rim locks are typical on mid-19th century houses, but our 1895 house has a few. They tend to be in the more humble spots, such as inside closets and inside bathroom doors.

I live in BK but was visiting a friend there and they had one of our (obscure) door plates and knew the name and maker, so I bought it and now I can search for it on eBay. Also when I visited Old House Parts in Kennebunk, Me., they had a lot of doors and door hardware. There are some dozen hardware salvage places on the East Coast, one in Chicago (alas Ohmega Salvage in Berkeley is no more).

So in my experience. I will let you know this first, i was a restoration contractor and worked on old doors and as i was moving away from that, i was thinking of restoring and installing old lock hardware until i fully retired. The gods have intervened and i am not sure i will be doing that.
This is my take on those locks: people view them as not worth the effort. And the old thin doors they were on are often thrown out because people want something more substantial. And to install better mortise locks, something more substantial is a must have.

If you wish to have the holes line up you have to identify the maker of those old locks. I have hardware catalogs i use for that purpose but me thinks these things predate the stuff i am used to dealing with that comes along about 1890.

The other issue you will find is that after people spent years throwing this stuff away, the few old house parts dealers are going to mark this stuff up a lot.

If you look at the replacement locks, the ones with nice brass eustucheon plates, some of those plates are large enough that they will cover the damage if you have to drill a nearby hole for a new lock. We luck out that way a lot with this sort of thing and because these mount on the back of the door, you won’t have to worry about the size or alignment of a mortise pocket.

I stripped the paint off the few locks that i have and without the paint, they are 5 inches tall and 4 3/4 inches wide. i would like the spindle hole and the key hole to match up. i’ve looked all over the internet and even been to salvage stores in various parts of the state. It’s a mystery to me that we have so many brownstones and historic homes inthe city but no salvage stores in the area that are full of these kinds of items (?). Are/were all these doors and locks just thrown away when renovations happen(ed)?

why does the height have to be 5″? is it because their are 15 layers of paint creating a ridge where you wish to mount them and it will not look sloppy with something smaller? you can sand that ridge off (being mindful that there is lead in it). if you are worried about the hole for the spindle and key lining up, these things never line up on any of these old locks and not even between the modern ones.

I just looked up what a rim lock is. They are those locks with a skeleton key that mount on the inside of the door and the knob spindle passes through it, meaning it is mounted at like 36″ high as opposed to higher, where a deadbolt might be mounted.

If this is what you are looking for for interior doors, know that they seem to appear on older houses that predate mortise locks. Pre post civil war era. At some point by the later 1870s, everything seemed to be shifting to mortise. These might have still been used on basement doors for a whole.

I do not have any. But they can be found new by googling “rim lock”. They may be on ebay but many people may not know what to call them so they will be mislabled.

I do have some mortise deadbolts i can sell. They have about a 5″ face on them. I will be selling a lot of lock hardware.

The reason i ask is, i have a stack of rim deadbolts. I have seen them in houses in brooklyn. They use a mortise cylinder that sits in a ring in the wood door sort of the way a rim cylinder might. The face on them might be 5″. They are a mortise deadbolt though.
