Is this a sump pump?
[Sump pump](//muut.com/u/brownstoner/s3/:brownstoner:acw2:sumppump.jpg.jpg)
My building is trying to figure out if we can responsibly pour a layer of concrete at the bottom of a dry well in our basement (it has bricks on the sides, dirt on the bottom) and we think it is by the sewer main, with a sump pump (???) to help in case of a leak or other problem. Any ideas on what we are looking at here?

could anyone explain what the purpose of that long extension is on one side of the trap? (and does it work for the intended purpose)

Thank you very much for the responses! We all have to start learning somewhere, and doing our best to take care of our homes properly.

also, water bugs are more likely to come out of drains and sewer vent pipes, you know from the pipes themselves that are open.

House trap indeed, but no need to get a plumber to extend it. Just remove the top 4 inches or so of dirt and pour concrete, do not cover the round metal ring/access point to the trap.

it is scary how clueless you are…that is the house trap …meaning that it is your connection from the building to the street sewer…you can get a plumber to put extensions on the seals so that you can pour concrete over it but that is a really bad idea for future maintenance

I should add – we are interested in pouring concrete because some exterminators told us this is a likely entry point for waterbugs (we’ve had a few recently).
