Is there a way to find owners who are renting directly?

Because of the nature of my job, no set salary, most major mgmt companies will not even look at my application.

Despite the fact that I can show how well my new job (four months in) pays., my great past rental history, no negative credit issues, etc. that’s how I got my current apartment.

So are there any listings for “rentals by owner?” Because the Craigslist section with that is not always 100% accurate.

Where do you wish to live? If you are game, just stake out the hoods you like and if you see a couple or people that feel good to you approach and ask if they know of anyone renting. If this neighborhood has long standing businesses ask in those as well. Some businesses own the buildings they are in. Also go to schools at pick up time (before the kids get out so you don’t look like a nut job) and ask the parents or caregivers. You can also help your cause by getting lots of letters and video of people vouching for you. Go far back and as current as you can. Ask them to speak about your reliability, habits, cleanliness, the good and the bad. I took in a tenant who had no “history” but his bank account had 3 million in it and his wife’s over 700K so we took a risk and they stayed for 7 years. They were quirky but they paid on time took care of all their own repairs and never gave trouble. Keep at it.

I can show, but trust me some of the larger companies just wont look. Rather than debate the whys and hows of that…just curious to find if there is a way to find landlords directly?

I see no filter for that on any of the sites. And as I said, or maybe I didn’t, even the Craigslist “by owner” section is filled with brokers.

Any landlord; large corporate or independent will want to see that you can comfortably afford the rent. If you are self employed or hired as an independent contractor you can still show your income.
If you are just starting out as self employed etc. Look for something way below what you feel you can afford and build up savings accounts. If you have been self employed for a while, most landlords will want tax returns for the last couple of years, six months bank statements as well as savings accounts for reserves, as you will not get any unemployment benefits if you do loose a contract etc. As well as good credit etc.
Private Landlords advertise on Streeteasy etc along with Brokers etc.
