Ipe Wood deck stain options
I have a large Ipe deck that gets a baked in sunlight in the summer.
I used 2 coats of Penofin Hardwood Formula during the initial install
2 years ago, but the finish wore off in less than a year, leaving the
wood looking silvery gray. Can anyone recommend alternative Ipe
stains that hold up longer?

I use Penofin on all of my decks. Ipe is so hard that it doesn’t penetrate the surface grain… It will penetrate the end grain. If you have a sunny deck, you need to reapply every year, or just let it go silver. As the dorkof windsor wrote, seasoned Ipe will absorb more oil, and you should get more time from your finish, whichever oil you choose. The thing about Ipe is that it can go silver, and still give you a lifetime of service. Steve

I think the people who have moved from Penofin to the Sherwin Williams product (SuperDeck Exterior Oil-Based Transparent) have been searching for longer lasting products, but I don’t think it is going to be significant. It has to be oil, and its going to wear out. The oil will soak in more than when it was new since new wood has its own oils, but outside weather is fairly harsh here even on a tropical exotic hardwood.

Take a look at Australian Timber Oil from Cabot. We reapply every 2-3 years and it holds up well.
