cookthebooms – its not stained, that is the natural color which will grey as steve mentioned. penofins is the standard oil which needs to be applied every other year. ipe is like few other woods, it is a complete nightmare to cut, drill, join and its heavy as hell. it splinters (usually ends are waxed). You can’t take a slightly warped board and finesse it like a pressure treated pine or something… its like cement, so if its not straight it can’t be used. My son and I just got splinters on the deck… time to sand and re-oil! You wouldn’t hire just hire any random people to install – thus the OP’s post. Upside is that it will last for 50 years, resistant to pests snd probably as fireproof as wood can get. Downside is the eventual guilt from ruining the rainforest. And you must use high quality stainless steel fasteners. Rich people problems.

Curious – did you buy the wood and have him install, or did contractor procure wood, clips, fasteners?

@ cook: something like Penofin would oil it and help it maintain that “wet” color. it would have to be applied every couple of years. some other products would allow it to grey (I think thompsons allows wood to grey). what you are after, i think, is UV protection. it is the UV rays that turn it grey, me thinks.

when we are finishing wood and i want to see what it will look like with a clear coat on it, i often do what you are suggesting by putting a spot of water on it to see how dark it will go.

and op, now that i think of it, if that company did not tell you what they used on it, you may wish to find out and make a note of it for follow up treatment. i tell my customers the products to use on doors if only so they know what to follow up with later. i even go so far as to ask them to take a picture of what i am using.

curious how they stained it! doesnt ipe tend to wear gray-ish and as a rain forest wood restore its color when wet?
