Internet wiring and security system

Do people have recommendations how to optimize wiring for internet service is a 4 story house? Also, do you have recommendations for security systems (video doorbell, cameras, motion sensors throughout the house, etc)? Are Ring or Nest equipment sufficient, or are there better quality manufacturers? Also, what companies can monitor these third party systems for active monitoring? Thank you

I paid about $1000 in stuff from Unifi, and about 30 times that to rewire my house.

Cat6 and coaxial in every room is generally a good bet, as well as a few points in closets in the middle of the floor to house access points. Terminate all that stuff at a home run in the basement, have your service line routed to the home run as well (we did some corrugated conduit and pulled through that). I did a Unifi system in my house, with a single gateway in the basement and 4 access points through the house, powered by a Unifi switch that serves power over ethernet (“PoE”). With my gigabit fiber connection, I get speeds of around ~750mbps up/down over wifi. These sorts of systems require some setup and administration know-how, but are the “right way” to do it.

I can’t advise on out-of-the-box monitoring systems, though I am in the process of outfitting a Networked Video Recorder system using a Synology NAS and their Surveillance Station package, which works with most PoE cameras. I’m not a fan of the cloud-based systems as the lack of longevity in their hardware, software locked to single provider, and data stored off site are all dealbreakers for me.
