Interior window above pony wall

In our gut renovation we removed the vestibule door. The entire front of the first floor is open – no hallway . We want to create an entryway by building a pony wall about five feet long, 53 inches tall, and a foot deep; the wall would double as bookcase/display case on the living room side. (See attached sketch; please ignore the landing – the stairs will now be straight). We are interested (inspired by the attached photo) in having a divided-light stationary window go from the top of the wall to the ceiling (which is 10′). My cursory research indicates we would need safety glass. We are imagining 12 panes, 3 across and 4 up. If we ordered this in one piece it would be a massive and probably expensive window, about 53 inches wide (with 4×4’s on each side) and 66 inches or so tall. My husband is thinking of building it. If he did, would the best approach be to create the basic rectangular frame, insert a single big piece of glass, then create the “lights” by adding trim probably using double-sided tape? Or would it be easier to build a frame that includes the int erior vertical pieces and insert three narrower panes of glass, then add the horizontal pieces, again probably using double-sided tape? Thanks! It doesn’t look like too bad a bicycle ride (worse by public transportation) but I’d rather that John, at his age, not bike in this heat. Perhaps in a few weeks when we are closer to working on that project there will be a time that would work for you. In any case, thank you very much for the offer and for all your generously given advice.

What a kind offer! We don’t have a car so if he came it would be by bike or public transportation. And tomorrow looks to be very hot. Could you text or email me the address so we can see what the trip would involve? 607 272-7562 , hubbard at matrixeditions.com. Thank you. And by the way, the doors he is building are coming out very well – including a giant 6 foot wide, 9 foot high pocket door between his future office and the future guest room. The wall will go only halfway across, and then when we have guests we can slide out the pocket door to complete the wall.

I might work from home tomorrow putting a coat of paint on a pair of doors. That means a light, brainless day. If you would like to send your husband over to me in zip 11379, with a sketch and measurements, i will help him lay this out and explain what cuts to make with what tools and tell him how to put the pieces together. It would take an hour.

Dont try to use one sheet of glass.

Something else. Look at big windows with multiple units of glass. I am not talking about divided lights. I am talking about sash. If you look at these giant windows, new plastic ones or old wood ones, many of these are made as individual sash and assembled as one by joining them together and hiding this by covering the joint with trim. You can make three easy to make sash and join them. They will be light and easy to move. Cap the joints with a molding similar to a wide astragal in that it is dressed the same on both sides.

Keep in mind, these will not move so you do not have to make the joints as strong as of they are active sash. Make the sash a little smaller and shim them in place and cap them with trim to hold them. You will need something across the top to hold them but cover the top and the structural wood with trim.

If you want, use my glass person; al at major lock and glass on freshpond. Btw, lam i is stronger and harder to break that plain old or tempered glass. If you use lami you can really make light weight sash.

Thanks. Yes, we have a table saw and router table . We’re not sure what you mean by “break each section into its own window.” Do you mean, once the end post and top post are in place, put two more vertical pieces in place, dividing the area into three, and then insert glass and horizontal pieces?

Do to have a table saw and router table?

I would break each section into its own window. These are not going to open and close and will be supported by the base and each other so basically you are making decorative frames. Be sure the top and post at the end run offer stability and support.

If you try to make the dividers as part of the window and assemble all of this, it will turn a very simple project into something a bit complicated.

You may not need laminated as it is not part of a doorway. But i would go with the lami as it is so much easier to handle. Tell them “no lables” on the lami or you might get a safety certification stamp on the corner of each.

I don’t think the pictures worked. I will try again using different names. [Ponyandstairs](//muut.com/u/brownstoner/s1/:brownstoner:GXxB:ponyandstairs.jpg.jpg) [Ponywallwithglass](//muut.com/u/brownstoner/s1/:brownstoner:OiP8:ponywallwithglass.jpg.jpg)
