Interior brick work

We have a brick wall running from the parlor floor to the garden level that has been painted white. We’d like to restore it to its natural brick color/finish.

Anyone have a recommendation for this type of work? Would either be a contractor or someone who does sandblasting I assume.

We got one quote that seemed high. Thank you!

Boo is correct. We do not offer stripping as a stand alone service because if i had to figure labor at 100 an hour be it myself or what i would charge for labor, this gets very pricey fast. That is a lot of wall.

The upshot is, if that is the only layer of paint, it is probably latex and will probably come of easy, maybe even with modern less toxic strippers.

I do not have the name of anyone.

I think any quote you get for stripping an interior brick wall will be high.

We are extreme DIY’ers who have tackled nearly everything you can imagine, but let me tell you, when it came to stripping the Kelly green paint off the exterior brick of of our home -just the garden level was green thankfully – I was never happier than when I handed it off to a contractor after trying on my own for a bit. This was in the heady days Steve speaks of with the methylene chloride widely available, too. And stripping paint off the exterior is light years easier than doing the interior, since you have to be so much neater inside.

And if you look hard enough, one can still see some green flecks still embedded in the brick, just because the brick/mortar will hold on to some color no matter what.

We used Innovation and they did it as part of our stoop restoration/house painting a few years ago, but unless you have money to burn on it, I’d find a way to live with the paint, or paint it a different color.

Thanks for the thoughtful reply.

If you have a contact for the person who did it that would be helpful. I’ve attached a picture of our brick. We are currently repainting the entire house but our painter said he doesn’t think he can do it. And he thinks because the brick is porous that would be a problem (maybe because the current paint seeped in and will still be visible in the brick after stripping).

We’d love to find a solution. [54C89171-CC15-4959-8FF1-7E31D104F9A2](//muut.com/u/brownstoner/s3/:brownstoner:Cugj:54c89171cc1549598ff17e31d104f9a2.jpeg.jpg)

Do not sandblast in your house. It will get everywhere, even if you put protection up.

Get a good painter who can strip paint.

Last fall i had a customer who needed an area of brick stripped and since they knew i stripped doors, they asked me. I was not only not interested but was also uncertain how well it would come out because of the crevices and nicks in the brick. I told them to ask their painter and they did and the job came out great.

Be aware that if there is older paint on there, it may not come off easy with modern chemicals. For that you will need methylene chloride which was removed from the consumer supply chain in 2017. Businesses, not some handy person, can still get it.
