Intercom

The intercom panel is out, maybe worn out. Do you know any intercom company to recommend?

i just looked at a modern aiphone apt panel on ebay and the one i saw had plug connectors and color coded wires. basically, if there is nothing wrong with the wires running from the main box, to change a door or apt panel, you would unplug it and plug the new one in.

the old ones are different. a lot of loose wires to be dealt with individually. dealing with those wires sounds like low voltage electric work to me.

And also, i do not think aiphone components can be repaired the same way a lee dan can be. When you open a lee dan the parts inside look like something from the 1950’s and the parts in an aiphone look like the inside of a modern electric device.

If your component parts are available, and to find out you will look up the model on line, you want to know what component is bad. If the entire system is down it can very well be the main panel where the power supply is. If everything works and powers up but one panel does not, that panel is suspect. Often it is the door panel because it is out in the elements.

I get involved in these because i rebuild doors. People either ask me to remove them or sometimes they know the door panel is bad and they buy a new one and ask me to swap them. I unhooked one just before covid started and also swapped a panel around that time. I don’t recall the brand of the panel swap but all it was was a plastic wire connector with a few colored wires in it that you plug into a recepticle on the panel. Two screws held the panel to the house.

The old systems were hard wired meaning the wires were held to a board by screws. These were easy to screw up because you could connect wires wrong. But with these plugs, it can only go one way. You don’t realize it but you already do this everytime you set up a desktop computer system- you hook up component parts and the power the system up and off you go.

Post the model of the aiphone. The model will be on the main panel that serves as the power source. It is often in a basement or closet. If it is modern and has plug connectors, i will let you know.

This is probably considered low voltage electrical work which requires a license. But if i got caught doing this on my house i would make a case that having plugs and recepticles makes this no different than hooking up a computer, monitor, keyboard, printer.

I am not offering services here.

Ok. I cannot give you that info but you can buy components and change this stuff. If this were my house, i would do this myself. I have changed these components on houses for customers i know well, but i am not a low voltage electrician and legally cannot and will not market myself. I am telling you, if you know someone mildly handy and you can figure out which end of this is bad, it is easy.

what brand is it? if it is a Lee Dan, it is possible to have it removed and serviced. the lee dan shop is in Hauppauge just off the LIE. the component parts can be swapped out of the door panel easily so long as the rest of the unit (the power supply and the apt panels) are still good.

find a locksmith or security system person who is also a low voltage electrician. if the system is no longer serviceable, they can help source a new one. and yes, the component parts of the new systems can be swapped out.
