>>> Insulating UNDER the Shoe Molding With Foam

I’ve pulled up the shoe molding and removed some damaged baseboards in order to have my floors refinished in my 100+ year old limestone.

It looks like the floors have pulled about 3/4” away from the brick party walls— leaving a substantial gap between the floorboards and the wall only hidden by the large shoe molding.

Any reason NOT to spray some expandable foam insulation under the baseboard, between the shoe molding and the wall?

I know it’s frowned upon to insulated the ventilation slats on a skylight— so air can circulate up through the the air shaft…. Might the gap between floors under the shoe molding present a similar function?

Thanks.

ok, colonial, thank you for that. i will look at that brand but if i said i wanted to fill the joist right across an open ceiling with a giant commercial sized can of this (it comes in a can the size of a propane tank with an applicator, maybe that is what you mean by “steel gun contraption”. if i wanted to do that, how would this stuff hang as i apply such a large mass of it? would the weight of this stuff pull itself down? understand, i have used those small cans from the corner store to fill small cracks, i have never done this on a grand scale. the reason i want to do it is to soundproof the floor above and fire proofing (they make fire proof product).

doorsby and homeinspector are the same

Steve, I filled the joist pockets in one bedroom so far. It has helped deaden some sound from next door. I’m using the “Great Stuff Pro” brand with the steel gun contraption, which has been moderately handy.

you may not NEED at Flir for those but the hubby got me a Seek Thermal imager for christmas one year (they were around $300 then) and OMG they are fun to have. They attach to your mobile phone and work thru an app.

I was so obsessed I was imaging not just the doors and windows in the house but him, the dogs, random visitors etc.

If you have the $$$ you want to spend on it, they are helpful and fun (tho I am a bit of a nerd, so take this for what it’s worth).

Do these things show stuff like heat transfer even when heat or ac is off? Say it is off, house is cold inside but temp is rising outside as afternoon approaches or daylight hits it, will that kind of transfer show that fast and hot or cold in either direction?

There is a specific reason why i am asking this.

Back when i did photography we had something called infrared film. Point it at a house on a cold day, take a photo and the heat loss areas show up red.

Flir is a thermal imaging camera that visually shows the areas of heat loss. For example, during the course of insulating a wall, I can visually inspect where the insulation is lacking and I can also see before and after. That’s just one example of course.

You don’t need the FLIR for temp. That reading can be gotten with a $20 handheld surface temp reader which I have found more effective. The FLIR is more useful to see if you insulated an area like a wall properly. In a thin strip like what you are describing, it may not work as well. That’s just been my experience but I can’t see what you have there.

Parlor level can be “double” insulated from basement and under shoe, while second floor will be filled with fp foam under shoe.. thanks all who chimed in.

Anyone have any luck with those FLIR cameras that attach to an android phone?

Thought I might as well tear and keep some records of the heat exchange and airflow before and after the foam is shot in.

The area you mentioned is quite important to stop the air being pulled up the building. Every bit helps. I’ve been making changes. It’s not going to be ideal or perfect but it makes a difference.

Cate, is that because these old places do not have paper between the sub floor and finish floor?

AFAIK this will do no harm. It will also do no good. You can’t insulate just in this one spot. Caulking all the joins and joints will help with air infiltration.

Colonial, are you filling the joist pockets below or removing shoe and putting the foam in and reinstalling the shoe? How is this proceeding?

I ask because at the start of covid, i wanted to do this from below with a sort of big tank of foam, fire proof, mostly to deaden sound. Are you working with smaller cans and how is that? Are you just filling by the shoe or further out?

Fireproof foam should present no harm. I’m already halfway through with this in my own house.

so this, in the newer old houses, rosin paper was lain across the entire floor. this was to prevent squeaking and stop air flow. we don’t want air from out cold basements coming up stairs. but in my house like so many others, air comes up from the basement where the shoe molding is. i have wanted to do what you describe for years in my own house and see no reason why it should not be done. i was actually going to do it from below with fire proof foam (the space between all of the floor joists in the cellar)

i am not sure if there is a reason not to do this but really i do not know. wait and see what others say. someone might have a really good reason not to do it.

ahh, the gap around the edge of the room and under the shoe allows the wood to expand and contract and not buckle the floor. but i doubt some spray foam will interfere with that movement. if you are worried, you can buy some fiberglass insulation and put strips of it in there.
