Installing a deck with screens.

Hi community, possibly architects?

Would there be any issues installing screens on a second floor, back yard deck in an unlandmarked brownstone. I have not seen this done, but if the screens are temporary, then it seems like it might be OK. The fact that I haven’t seen it done makes me think there might be some DOB types of issues. Does anybody know about this?

Many thanks in advance!

Thanks jimhillra for the clarification re deck and balcony. Luckily in our case, we are thinking of a parlor floor structure, so a deck. Thanks resident2 for your thoughts. Good points we will consider and discuss with a contractor or architect.

Bear in mind the difference between a deck and a balcony. A deck is allowed at the first floor above grade, usually meaning the parlor floor.. A balcony is higher than that. You cannot have steps from a balcony to the ground, and lately ,the DOB has been enforcing a rule that requires a balcony to be completely self supporting (no columns).

I think it is not done because people do not want to inhibit their view of the outside world, do not want the additional maintenance and find citronella candles more romantic.
Is your back deck part of a fire escape? In which case probably no.
To add structure to hold your screens may well require a permit, screens without structure may well become flying saucers in a wind storm.
