Inspections for Type 1 alteration

I’m planning on making a cellar addition to the back of my house, as I understand that’s a type 1 alteration and it would require an inspection prior to the work being done. Previous owners have unpermitted work done including what I assume to be an illegal shower downstairs (I plan to put in a permitted bathroom in that area anyways). My question is what will that initial inspection entail and would it potentially open me up for violations based on what already exists, or is the purpose of the inspection to establish the pre-existing condition.

That doesn’t sound like an Alt 1 to me, assuming you already have a cellar and you’re just enlarging it. You can do horizontal enlargements with an Alt 2. Verticals require Alt 1. Be careful about the bathroom. There are very strict regulations on a 3-piece bath in a cellar.
