Insect burrowing into sidewalk by gate post near stoop
We’ve got two holes in the ground and a mound of dug up sandy material. Photographed one of the little diggers, and it appears to be a cicada-killer wasp. (I’ve added the hyphen because…it should have one.) Everything I’m reading about them indicates that they dig in dirt and sand and so we don’t really have to worry about them eating through the stoop and sidewalk, but boy, does it look like it. It really doesn’t look like a mason bee, which is the only thing that shows up when you google relevant terms. Anyone have any experience with these guys? Cicada-killer wasps, that is.

They apparently like a hard dry sandy soil – not healthy fertile soil. So maybe that is their only only option? it would seem quite well protected if they can manage get down there. They aren’t aggressive towards humans

Thanks, Cate. There are no cracks in the concrete, and the critter appears to be burrowing through it, but the holes are so close to the base of the fence posts it’s hard to say. Mason bees can drill through brick, but I don’t know if these suckers can or if we should be worried.

The wasp is really burrowing into the actual sidewalk? Or the dirt/sand/crumbling mortar next to it? Solitary wasps (even yellow jackets) don’t seem to pose too much of a problem unless you bother them. I’ve read you can sprinkle mulch over dirt in the garden to discourage bees from burrowing there, but that probably wouldn’t work near the sidewalk. Maybe time to redo the concrete if it’s cracking.
