Important update - IRON GUY

Okay so for all of you emailing me on this Iron Contractor – get this. He has now threatened to sue us and claims he never took $10K in cash and that we owe him. So not only did he fraudulently take cash from wife, refuse to answer the phone and refuse to perform the service – he now claims we owe him $$. As if two busy professionals really have nothing better to do than fleece an iron contractor out of $10K. ANYONE who is thinking of hiring an iron contractor should email me offline so you can be spared of this individual. We will continue to protect our community. The Department of Consumer Affairs is now involved.

I just read the entire post here. you mention that you will “continue to protect your community”. I know you have learned your lesson here so there is no need to belabor that but I want to point out that by paying by check, you are taking a system that operates in a “gray area” and legitimizing it. not only do you have your paper trail but by paying him by check, he is less likely to pay workers off the books which means they will be paid by check and will have workmen’s compensation and disability insurance and will have paid into unemployment insurance; those workers are part of your community and ensuring these protections for them helps the community.

estebancharles: the admission of handing a contractor 10k in cash opens the conversation a little broader than it would have been anyway. though I suppose we should not knock people for telling the truth because that is a very rare trait these days.

Ha ha don’t sweat it. She is an academic and over her skis. I’m not a brooklynite who gets easily offended. I am thinking of hanging a sign with iron contractors name on the property in giant letters – we have a high traffic street so it might be a good way to warn our neighbors against his predatory practices. He sent us an insane letter threatening legal action. Then promised he’d reach out to my wife for settlement which of course he hasn’t done.

i am a contractor. i would not trust myself carrying 10k in cash around. my wife would not trust me. glad to hear DofCA is doing something since us licensees give them a good bit of money every few years to renew our licenses.

This cash payment was not my doing…I’m trying to deal with it now. He has since responded to Dept of Consumer Affairs. I ha had two people reach out to me offline and claimed similar verbal abuse. Nightmare.

So many construction horror stories. I am glad I didn’t go with him. Oddly he seemed respectful and thoughtful when I met with him. Good luck and hope everything works out for you.
