Illegal to park in my own driveway?

My lawyer tells me that I am not allowed to park in my own driveway in front of my garage in Brooklyn. I have been living here since 2005 and have never heard this before. I have a one-family semi-attached house, with an attached garage (that I do not use to park my car). I have a 10′ curb cut leading to the garage and the entire front of my house was paved over so I can park 2 cars there side to side if need be. Attached is a photo showing this. Since I am dealing with DOB on another violation, I want to make sure I won’t get dinged for parking in my driveway when/if they come back to reinspect.

Am I forced to just park across my driveway for the rest of my life? Or do I need to “legalize” my driveway so I can park there as I have been doing for 13 years. I don’t intend to use my garage to park the car, especially in the winter. This is ridiculous to me, although it seems NYC does a lot of ridiculous things to their citizens.

sixyearsandcounting: By my own experience the extent of Mid-Manhattan-reachable-by-bike is approximately five miles in any directions in NYC or roughly an hour’s ride in traffic or ten miles outer edge-to-outer edge opposite. That was the CitiBike catchment area. Their original center of users was just south of Stuy Town in Manhattan but Google makes the center of Manhattan at just north of Times Square. Yes it was and remains Manhattan-centric. A long haul for many but the exceptional risk takers. All Staten Island, north Bronx, eastern Queens and southern Brooklyn are just “from away” as they say in Maine, or “Whitelandia” as Ron Kuby would say, or “fly-over country”. Virtual suburbs. Not areas for Motivate to invest with any surety of a probable Return-on-Investment. So they went begging to the City Council for an “SBA Loan”.

Actually, every time I drive it I’m just driving it. I have one that weighs 5,500 lbs. I bet that really triggers you. But I don’t park it on the street. You should rent one sometime and get out in the country. Might clear cobwebs from your mind.

Get your lot survey and determine the extent of your lot. You must have 18 feet clear from the edge into your property. That’s why owners pull out the front facade and make a pocket under the structure for the car. Better to have a vehicle that’s only 18 feet long.
