IKEA kitchens
Love the look of IKEA kitchens. Has anyone had one for a long while and is still happy with the quality?

five years. our kitchen still looks great except for the corners of the toe kicks. we did some customization of the hardware/faucets, we bought beautiful Calcutta marble in Long Island City and had it mitered to look like two-inch slabs, and we also included some custom millwork which makes a huge difference. people are always shocked our kitchen is IKEA. and seriously, with the money you save, you can update your kitchen in ten years and still end up doing better. the cheapest custom cabinets will run you 2-3 times what an IKEA kitchen will run you. the other benefit is that you can continue to customize your kitchen as you grow into it. we had some cabinets that we converted from shelves to drawers for example. and IKEA has some pretty cool drawer inserts, too. no regrets. also, i would not use anything BUT IKEA for a rental. ours is still going strong.

Ikea makes a solid wood butcher block in addition to the wood veneer one.

Yes, the return policy makes it easy. The lengthy wait in the chaos of Ikea’s ground floor not so much.

Brown 2013 is wrong, you can easily return IKEA cabinets, even after you have opened them. I have done it myself more than once. You just have to wait in the line.

Prior to a recent renovation, our kitchen was 15 year old Ikea cabinets. Still looked and worked great, except for the toe kicks, which were peeling.

There are some huge issues to be aware of but Ikea is ok. I had an Ikea kitchen for about 3 years at a rental and it was very functional but I don’t think I would use Ikea without some adjustments.
One, particle board surrounds around a sink or any area with moisture is just stupid. Particle board swells if it gets wet and it will get wet under your sink. In our kitchen, we had a small leak while we were out of town and it resulted in at least 3 unrepairable cabinets. Buy or build a simple wood surround instead and attach the Ikea cabinet fronts.
Ikea butcher block counter tops are also particle board with a thin wood veneer. They look nice will not last long.
The biggest reason to be cautious? Surprise, Ikea has no returns . You cannot return things to the store or online and good luck trying. Go ahead, try. I cannot tell you the disbelief I had when. after years of shopping there, I realized this. If you buy a few pieces that aren’t the right size, etc. you are stuck with them.
Ikea is fine if you plane to frequently replace all areas of your kitchen and love constantly remodeling. Otherwise, there are a ton of inexpensive cabinet retailers who will get you wood cabinets that will actually last for awhile and stay looking nice.

A few architects I’ve spoken to say if you’re aren’t going for custom don’t bother with anything but Ikea. Easy to assemble and install, easy to replace cheaply if something busts, durable hinges and hardware especially cushioned drawer pulls. Plus Ikea has them on sale every quarter for like 25% off (and they refund you the price difference within like 90 days if you bring in your receipt and you miss a sale). Do it.

We renovated our kitchen with Ikea’s previous line (prior to the new one currently available) and we are in our third year and absolutely love it. Functional, sturdy, really no complaints. We purchased additional doors and colors from the old line as they were fading them out so we would have them on hand to change them up or replace if necessary. We are in the process of designing a second Ikea kitchen in a second home and are excited to use the new line.

IKEA kitchens are a great value for money. High quality hinges & closures, and the particleboard does not offgas. Personally don’t see why anyone would get anything else unless you go high-end. My kitchen is 15+ years & shows little signs of wear.
Just installed new on in rental. I used a firm called Masters of Assembly & they did a great job… picked up the boxes from IKEA, assembled & installed. Keep an eye on them, though as they install.

There are also a number of companies that offer custom door front options that work with ikea cabinet boxes. This could potentially save money over custom cabinetry while obtaining a similar look. One such company is http://www.semihandmadedoors.com/.

We put one up in a rental 10 years ago. Cabinets are holding up fine. The doors started to look worn after a while (laminate starts to peel off at corners) but it is easy and cheap just to buy the doors again and replace the old ones. Still cheaper and nicer looking than anything we saw at lowes.
