I need brownstone door hinges

I need of hinges for my brownstone door (4 & 1/2″). During renovation, my contractor lost them !%*!. The supply-houses are all back-ordered several weeks. Thought I’d take a shot here.

also, keep something in mind here. if OP tries to install a modern, hardware grade hinge in an old hinge mortise, the modern cheap hinge may not be heavy enough to fill out the mortise pocket and will require excessive shimming or the door will hit the frame and will not close without resistance, leading to problems later (that said, a lot of the restoration hinges, those like kate mentions at House of… and other places are heavy, thick plated).

what i have just said above is something most people will not think of until they are in the middle of it, wondering what is going wrong. IMO, the contractor will probably use whatever the OP hands him, without considering all of the issues that could result in the immediate term or later (i had some very light duty baldwins here and told him about them with reservations and he smartly declined them) and will “make it work” for now and leave it for the customer to deal with a year down the road. (i get a lot of phone calls to fix other contractor’s problems and i have enough work that i do not need that business).

OP wanted them right away and i could not help him as i could not put a match of 4 together in the finish and size he wanted. he is specific about the finish.

it is hard to find decent hinges in the city. baldwin are our go to brand and they cannot be had same day- every retailer orders them (simons in the city). in so far as many of the other hinges out there, that are on the shelf, the quality is not there. the hardware store hinges are garbage if they have them in 4.5″. I just checked and Home Depot has them in 4.5″ and in the finish OP needs but they are a company called Everbilt; i have never installed this brand hinge on a customer’s door. Dykes might carry Stanley; this is stuff people in the suburbs use. the quality is not there.

the OP is trying to hang a door where existing mortise cuts are and this is why i did not want to help him with something “temporary” (and i told him this) and why i would not recommend he find something local until what he wants arrives; He already has holes drilled in the frame. if he drills more holes in the fra me to hang a temporary hinge and then drills more holes when he sources the correct hinge, he has just ruined the door frame and that will have to be dealt with.

The old vintage ones often crack and cannot be used. Plenty of stores have plain heavy duty brass steeple hinges similar to 1930s style (I got some at Dyke’s, and any other big hardware store should have them, and you might try calling Crest in Williamsburg to see if they have them in stock). You can also order reproduction Victorian style steeple hinges in the size you mention through House of Antique Hardware but they take about two weeks to arrive even when not back ordered. You might call Hippo Hardware in Portland, Ore., to see if they reproductions in the size you need in stock and can mail. They were very helpful when I visited last year and had a good selection.

i have some 4.5″ hinges in stock here.

this is what is going to happen when you go to use hinges that are not the same as the original; the screw holes will not line up. sometimes we just go with a larger hinge anyway, say to 5″, and enlarge the hinge mortise.

we tend to use baldwin hinges as modern replacements, though sometimes Von Morris. I always use brass and stay away from old cast steel as they crack. most of the old stuff, unless high end, is garbage anyway. i do have some East Lake here, brass or bronze, but may not have a complete set.

Demo Depot on 125 st (i heard they were moving) had an entire collection of hinges in their display cases. Big Reuse will have some though i have not been there in a while.

as i get older i want to get more into the hardware aspect of this and less into carrying heavy doors around, so i do not mind helping people with this sort of thing.
