I looked at my Coned bill and noticed that it almost doubled?

We live in 2bd apartment in Queens and generally had our electric bills to be in the range of $100-$150 a month. However, in the last 2 months (Jan-Feb), I’ve seen it spike to about $300 each. I do not think we suddenly started consuming a lot more electricity… does anyone has any idea what might be happening and what we can do about it?

just like Mozee said ConEd indeed hiked rates in New York in the last few months, so partially you are seeing the effect of the increase. I’d suggest looking at sites like https://www.powersetter.com that compares rates from alternative suppliers. It also does hurt to check the bills for the last year to see whether usage has gone up, and maybe you have some ‘leaking appliance’

Go look at your meter and make sure that you do not see any extra wires plugged into it. Check the rear as well.
That kind of jump generally means that someone is jumping into your meter.

Compare the bills. were some of the bills “estimated” and others based on actual readings? Sometimes they need to make up underestimates. Also, compare the most recent bill to your current reading and then look back and see if it past bills are showing different usage.
