Op & others, if you have questions about this research as it pertains to the metropolitan area (really nyc which pre 1898 meant the boroughs plus town records like jamaica or newtown or nassau/suffolk), so long as the moderators don’t mind ask away.

Also, pre ellis island nyc had castle garden immigration center.

I can see this sort of research pertaining to this site because when a lot of people get an old house, they research the occupants.

Op, most records are now on line but before they were i used to go to the municipal archives in an old court (surrogate’s?) building across from city hall. It was there that i found where my ancestors lived (dekalb, covert, flatbush, president) and got death records to find where they are buried. As recently as 3 years ago i went there to locate my 3rd g grandparent’s marriage (manhattan 1847). But i no longer go in there because every time i do the record i was looking for comes up on family search (free & owned by lds) or ancestry within 3 mos. They are really getting into some specific records now that they have published all of the census, immigration
& city directories.

Ok. Like bob says personnel records will be private. There are some business records in libraries but in so far as i know they are only what is published else where. Years ago i wanted to look up a patent my 2nd great grandfather applied for. I went to the NYPL Business Library on like 5th ave in the city. In 37 years of doing this research i have yet to find a library with such specific a collection to include unpublished files. Perhaps there are archives out there where businesses deposit their records (pittsburgh has an archive collection titled “archives of an industrial age”: i often wonder if they contain records of the steel industries) but personnel records sound like at minimum bad taste to let others see and at worst, a lawsuit. Too risky.

FWIW A&S was taken over by Macy’s >30 years ago. IF the personnel records still exist in some archive they might be considered confidential. They certainly were in the City agency for which I was personnel director prior to my retirement.

Not sure the folks on here know too much about this sort of thing. I sometimes mention my brooklyn ancestors in referance as to where they lived (bushwick) and where they reside now (cypress hills and lutheran and evergreen cemetaries). My 3rd g grandfather was a police officer in nyc (pre consolidation) and i wrote to the police and no records could be found. Is A&S even around anymore? If not, i cannot imagine the records existing. Keep in mind, it costs money to store these and many companies date the boxes for destruction as they archive them. They are constantly cleaning the archives out.
