How to secure parking for street sewer work?

We’re having our sewer main replaced, but the plumbing company needs to have the parking in front of my brownstone “secured,” even though it’s all street parking (Fort Greene). Am I allowed to put a “No Parking” sign on my front yard to prevent people from parking there for a few days? How have others dealt with this?

If time allows it wouldn’t hurt to put out some garbage cans, orange tape, and no parking signs the evening before the plumbers are scheduled to show up. If it works good–otherwise they’ll have to reschedule.

BTW, when I had my sewer line replaced years ago the plumbers [Figliolia] were able to work around parked cars.

@BobMarvin @NewTomeHouse: Yeah, they said they normally do it on alt-side, but this week, they can only do it on days that aren’t alt-side. Seems from everyone here that we should just wait to start on an alt-side day, even though the plumbers’ schedule won’t be open on a Friday for a few weeks. Thanks for all your insight!

I agree with “newtomehouse.” Furthermore, if your contractor DOSN’T know this they may be inexperienced working in NYC and you might want to look elsewhere.

As mentioned above this type of work is typically scheduled to start on alternate side street days when cars are moved. This is how all work that required street access in front of my place was done. Your contractor should know this.

Why dont you have them do this during the alt-side day? This is what we’ve done for our water main, gas line and dumpster delivery for the last 6 months.

@arkady: Thank you! I just called and left a message. Will the precinct put up cones for us, and will they let me tow if someone parks there? The problem with my block is that only one side is alt-side (the other side is No Parking ever), so people just park their cars all week.
