How do I find out if there is a break in the chain of title?

This brownstone belonged to my g-grandfather. His daughter, my mother, is still alive, but remembers nothing about it. But it appears in census records. There was another next to it which belonged to his father, but I found an article in a newspaper about a sale of that one. I have not yet found access to public records extending back so far. If anyone is willing or able to help, please let me know.

Before you pay anyone to do anything, look up the property on ACRIS, on the City’s dept of finance website, if you haven’t done that already. You can look up the property by block and lot (and look up the b&l by address) and then filter for deeds without time restriction. You should be able to see the conveyances. If you have the time and inclinaiton, you can also go to the City register’s Brooklyn office in the Brooklyn muni bldg on Joralemon and trace back the conveyances through the books and look up the deeds.
