Historical photos

I think there is an office near City Hall where I might be able to obtain photos of a carriage house I plan to renovate. It is in a Landmark district and they would be helpful. Does anyone know where this office is? or what it is called ? or how to obtain them ? maybe on line at this point.

Sometimes it is helpful to purchase photos of your property and the adjacent properties. As noted above, you can go down to the city archives and preview on microfiche but it’s a hassle and you still have to wait the same amount of time to receive the prints.

If you are going in person just make sure to have the block and lot number for your house ready so you can get the right microfilm roll. Surrogates Court has made lots of tv/movie appearances so it is worth a visit for the staircase alone! There is also a new exhibit space on the first floor displaying archival items pulled from the massive collections.

it was the Surrogates Court – thus the elegance of the building. The customers were all deceased but there was a lot of money to be made in disposing of their estates and caring for the minor children left behind, but only if the decedent was rich.

LOL, Maggie. Yes, while Law & Order used the 60 Centre Street steps for exterior shots (inaccurate, of course, because that is the civil part of Supreme Ct., NY County) but I believe many of the courtroom and hallway interiors were shot in the Muni Archives building. Maybe in tweed at some point, too. L&O diehards will know better.
