Hiring for small paint stripping job: overmantle mirror

Hi all! Looking for someone who would be able to help with a small paint stripping job – removing the paint from this relatively large (5×5) overmantle mirror. I’d love to do this myself but unfortunately just don’t have any space in my home, especially with two small kids around. Any recommendations would be appreciated! The mirror has a backing that would be destroyed by dipping and if removed then the mirror becomes regular glass, FYI. Protect the backing from scratches and such so you don’t have to replace the mirror.

These places like dip n strip have pretty big dip tanks. Most people who go to them report good results. I hear a lot about them from customers and have never heard anything bad. The only downside that i can ser is crossing bridges.

I can tell you this, it costs me so much to strip a door labor wise that if they were closer to me, i would be taking doors to them.

If his team is in the area, he may charge less because he can hit it between projects, though he often does full houses so is working for weeks or months at one place. I know he’s doing a few in park slope now.

So a couple of things. there are challenges to finding someone to do this and i will elaborate and maybe you can find something usefull.

First. This is labor intensive work. To find anyone who has responsibilities to do this, they have to charge $100 an hour. That is not what they make, that is what they charge before insurance, fica, sick days, vacation – all the good things we have been told we must have or should have. Count on a day to strip it. Even if it is less, count on the person doing the job to use a full billable day even if it is only 5 hours or so. They will quote a day. Plus material. What i have just stated applies to someone coming to your house.

There is a dip and strip on the other side of the gw and they can do it for less.

There is another issue. We do not know how much of what kind of paint is on it. The top coat looks like latex which will come right off. But other paint could be varying oils and some are problematic. The old varnish will come right off.

It is possible to find people who will do this hourly for a lot less mo ney but i do not condone a labor environment where people think it is ok to hire human beings without either compensating them for retirement, potential work related health issues, sick days, vacation, etc. Now that i have said that, there are others out there who can do this for less. Here is the problem with doing that: in order to purchase methylene chloride, one has to have a business, meaning a FEIN. Maybe a business bank acount or cert of insurance would do it. Without access to methylene chloride, it MIGHT be difficult to remove any oil paint

There are also heat guns and lye for stripping. Peel away is lye and it will burn the wood and must be neutralized. Peel away makes a stripper that does not burn the wood. For some reason i cannot explain, i have tried all of these strippers and make my own lye but i always go back to methylene. There are also citrus strippers and they work on latex and old varnishes.

Also. most people will want to strip this outside. It is getting cooler out and some chemicals will slow down in their ability to strip.

I do have a dip tank here. I am not offering my services (i rarely just strip things, not as a standalone service; it is labor intensive horrible work and i only strip doors i rebuild; that’s not to say i would not consider a once off, but i am busy. ) but i am using this opportunity to let brownstoners know that i might give that tank away on this board for free in a few weeks.
