HEPA Air Purifier during Renovation
Good Morning. I’m looking for advice. The owner of the house next door/investor began a gut reno in December. There has been lots of noise but what concerns me is all of the dust. I work from home and these houses are old and I have asthma. Lead and asbestos particles are more than likely in the dust which comes into my home. I had a chat with him this week and he’s offered me this air purifier. Does anyone have advice or have you used this? Thank you.

Would having them tape plastic over your windows and front door (with access through the plastic) in addition to the purifier be an option. It will lessen dust

not sure what they can do to mitigate the situation, but the hepa unit seems like a reasonable offer. you could ask them to foam the beam pockets if they are exposed, which would be a bonus post-reno with smells. good luck.

I am not actually on the work site, just next door but it’s a gut renovation of a 3 story brownstone that was built pre 1899. The parlor floor is probably 1000 sq feet and the living room that I work from is maybe 400 sq feet. Has anyone had this experience? Do you think this air purifier will keep the air safe. Thank you.

You do not say how much dust is flowing around but I work with a lot of dust and sometimes in my shop I work with dangerous dusts – dust from grinding carbide metals and from sanding lead paint and even grinding glass and using silicate epoxy thickeners – and I do not rely on some little air purifier to catch it. It would be too slow and would move too little air to keep it from getting to my lungs before it had been purified. We have to stop it at the source. In my case, I use dust extractors.
If the construction next door is creating dust in your house, you have to stop it before it gets in. What is the source? Maybe talk a little about that and we can try to help you close the source.
