Heated Below Grade Stoop Entrance

Has anyone installed heat tracing in a below grade front stoop entrance area?
I’m about to undertake a full facade restoration and am considering heat tracing in that area to melt the snow.

@Master Plvmber – There’s already a drain in the center of the area and the existing/crumbling concrete is sloped towards it.
@Urbandad – you’re correct, it’s the areaway

I think op is talking about the areaway. It’s not a bad idea, I’d do as small an area as possible, and make sure the hardscape is pitched where the melt off should go. You don’t want water to go somewhere unheated and freeze into an icy mess.

An often overlooked design consideration for snow melting systems is where to put the water once the snow has melted. In other words, we only install snow melting systems where there is a drain or other path for water run-off very nearby.

I never have snow below the stoop. I have 5 stairs going up from the basement and half of that melts. The very bottom…never. Next time i do my sidewalk though….. i’m heating it for sure.
