heat pump quote - is this reasonable?

I am looking to install a new heating/cooling system in my house upstate. i got this quote, can anyone tell me if this seems reasonable? The job is repurposing all of the existing ductwork, electric, drains, thermostat wiring, but as noted new wiring has to be run for the heat pump because the existing system is AC only…the price quoted is $12,400 but they did not break it down at all so I have no idea how much is the equipment and how much is labor….

Install New First Co. Hydrocoil Handler
24,000 BTU capacity
Reconnect to existing heat lines
Reconnect to existing ductwork
Rewire system to handle heat pump function
Purge and bleed out heat lines from boiler
Reconnect to existing nest thermostat

Install New Lennox outdoor Heat Pump condenser
2 Ton, 16 SEER
Set on new level padding
Reconnect to existing electrical
Purge and drain refrigerant lines
Fill system with new R410A refrigerant
Run new thermostat wire from condenser to handler

Backing out the cost of the Lenox floated above, this seems a little high to me given that all you’re really doing is swapping the outdoor unit and reconnecting to existing infrastructure but good luck finding someone to install for a “reasonable” price. We get fleeced no matter what.

You will never find a reasonable price. There is none. Read the scope. Compare different proposals. Ask questions. When you get familiar with the subject, you most likely will end up going with a more expensive contractor.

Randolph, there are contractors who play by the rules. Those contractors have no choice but to charge more because they exist in the system. They have to cover overhead that includes all of the legal aspects of running a business and all of the cost to protect oneself and the taxes, etc. I know for a fact that plumbers and electricians and roofers pay a lot for required protection. Then there are contractors who cheat: they exist in the shadows and cheat their employees, the irs, the state, the city. They hide their assests so if they get sued they can’t be found and hence carry no insurance. When unknowing homeowners compare the price between a legitimate contractor and a cheat, they assume that the legitimate contractor is a cheat because their price is higher when in fact it is often the guy with a much lower price who is the cheat.

It took me years of self employment to understand it.

my main takeaway from the entire thread is this – no wonder homeowners and contractors are always at war and distrustful of each other! as a homeowner, unless you have some sort of inside knowledge of the trade, there is absolutely no way to understand if you are getting a fair price because contractors are clearly unwilling/unable to be even remotely transparent about their pricing and they seem to think they belong to some special class of workers who have an extra great struggle to make a living. everyone has to work hard for what they get, everyone in the city (or anywhere for that matter) faces challenges, etc etc etc. this is not exclusive to contractors but they seem to feel entitled to hide behind it. the whole situation is extremely frustrating.

now it is doors’ or chris’ turn to tell me why homeowners are the ones with unreasonable expectations…..and around and around we go!!!!

Because of the price differential, when someone calls me from northern westchester, i tell them “my prices are city centric, if you can find someone who can do what i do a little further north, you will save money”.

Just because we charge more here does not mean we make more. There is more opportunity here yes, but increased costs and numerous issues associated with working in a city mean we have to work very hard for what we get. In truth, as i get older, i’d rather back into a driveway and go to work without any hassle.

Very tough to compare two different location types, Urban v Suburb, due to Overhead and Efficiency fluctuations. I would not use that as a barometer.
You are doing the right thing by getting multiple proposals; that is ALWAYS my first go to. Second is the Bocelli Test.

I do not think he was asking for a comparison. He simply asked if the price sounded reasonable. Had people said the price sounded high here in nyc, a good assumption might be that it is way too high for ulster and he better shop around a bit more.

If hvac is unregulated, the customer loses. The home related trades where there are no regulation, like with home improvement contractors and painting and now i suppose hvac, that is where the trouble begins. You will have legitimate contractors taking the time to do it all by the book and charging what they should be charging. Along comes some guy who decides to take a few short cuts to get the job. The customer sees the lower price and goes for it and the process continues until all of the legitimate companies are forced out of business by hacks. Slippery slope, yes. But this is why no one can find a professional painter in nyc.

Regulation is good for unknowing consumers.

Another point: if you are asking on RAW COST, you could likely get this done for a fraction of the cost. HVAC is not licensed and the installs are not regulated. I have seen 24K Condensor with one head New Installation get done for less than 8K.
We did have to remove that unit and reinstall it but still; I have seen it.
