hearthstone installation
We’re looking to install a hearthstone (probably bluestone) in front of a fireplace that currently has none (the wood floors run all the way to the mantel). Can anyone recommend someone who can install this correctly, so that it’s fully meshed around the edges of the mantel? There are quite a few edges around the sides and I’m not sure if this requires cuts to the stone itself, and/or perhaps removing parts of the mantel first? Thank you!

I’m not sure if this is relevant, but the tile hearth (originally under a coal stove) we removed in our kitchen when we installed new flooring was over a layer of earth. That was in our garden floor “basement “ (over a cellar). I don’t know if that’s ever used under fireplace hearths.

If you are planning to use the fireplace burn a fire, research this carefully and bring in an experienced chimney mason. Appearances can be misleading. Many brownstone fireplaces were not designed to burn solid fuels. In that case, you may need to completely rebuild the floor around the fireplace — before installing the new hearthstone — to make sure headers and joists don’t touch the stone or brick.

OP, you can do this yourself. if you have read what i said above and want to give it a whirl, post pictures and ask questions.

the meshing around the edges may or may not come from a tile installer who may or may not want to cut that on site. i frequently order saddles and have to have the stone cut around the inside of the house and i do not (though i have) cut them on site (i am not a stone person). the way to get this made is to take a piece of foam board and place it against the mantle and then use a dividers to scribe the outline in the board and then cut that out and make sure that board fits. cut the excess of the back. get your exact size and take it to one of the discount stone shops that sell remnants (in greenpoint) and show them. they will be able to cut it out for you (though i have not seen a lot of bluestone there). so if this is something you can move yourself and put in an suv (dont lift stone flat, turn it on edge so it does not crack) and get to your house, any handyman can install it with thinset mortar. you can install it if you passed first grade finger painting.
when i do the saddles for people, i am charging them more for the drive time to order this stuf f and pick it up and the time spent drawing the template. that is how easy the install is.
i picked this up as part of my door and entry work even though i hate tile work. you can do it.
