Hardie Board Cost

Everything I’m seeing online says I can install Hardie board siding for between $7 and $11 per square foot. Does this sound correct? Does anyone have any experience or recommendations?

I need the top two floors of my three-story, 20-foot-wide townhouse done in the front and back, so about 800 square feet total. There are a total of 11 windows and a door to frame out, which I guess would be subtracted from the total square footage. And I would need the aluminum removed in the front and the shingles removed in the back. I’m expecting a little patching from bits of water damage will be necessary as well.

Thanks in advance. Contractor opinions welcome.

In the past year, my house was entirely covered in prepainted Hardie Board (ocean blue) with a contractor I found. My neighbor did it about six months prior with home depot. We paid between $40k and $50k each. (It’s hard to come up with an exact number because there was other work too.) I paid the materials separately and the Hardie Board was about $7k.

in 2015 i had the front and back of my house done in hardie board- front was the artisan line, primed to paint. back was the lower grade product prefinished. total cost of materials and install INCLUDING installing new plywood sheathing, hardiewrap and installing andersen series 3 windows (the openings had been framed and prepared by my GC) was roughly 15k. this was the upper 3 floors of a 20′ wide house (garden level is brick).

hope that gives you some context.

Hi @DouglasAlan – Please pass along any good contractor recs you receive. We’re looking to do the exact same thing to our woodframe rowhouse. Based on my research, @resident2 is spot-on. We’ve priced out Hardie Plank at Lowes (or maybe Home Depot?), and its very reasonable. But, the labor costs seem rather daunting. One contractor also told me there was likely asbestos under our aluminum siding, so I’m rather apprehensive about the whole endeavor. :/ R

The end of each cut of Hardie needs sealing; so your 11 windows will need extra attention. You will need to trim them out with Azek or similar.
The actual cost of buying the Hardie is relatively cheap; I recently did a 2 story beach house approx 1,800 sq ft of Hardie, it cost less than $3,000 delivered. The labor is what costs the money.
So depending on if you are in a Landmark district, if you are using a direct craftsman or a specialist company that subs it out to the craftsman etc… prices vary.
One specialist company that will remain nameless I found out marks up the Hardie plank by 300% . So price up your insulation board, the felting etc and see what they are charging for labor & overhead….. with some specialist companies of Hardie it is mind boggling.
