Handyman for Finishing Work

I need somone a solid skilset doing detail work that is reasonably priced.

Its a 120 year old home so much of the work requires creative custom solutions to make it look nice.

Steve agreed but these people are apparently sitting around a lot. In any case, city housing isn’t the best maintained so a person doing multiple things could work out just fine. We’re not talking fine finishing here

Looks like my post above got cut off. @Shurafa You’ll have to match the molding at Dykes. You can either pick new molding or take a piece of yours. They may have something off the shelf that matches or you’ll need to have them make it. Smaller lengths made custom will cost quite a bit.

Vard, that way of doing things, having someone else make the openings and have a plaster person only close them is probably about as efficient as it can get. That is why it is better for op to source someone who does plaster and someone who can do the wood. They will each move faster. That plaster person the city is looking to hire is probably super fast and efficient and it is better to pay him 50 an hour and have him do just that than hire someone like him who is multi talented and drag him down with other things, having to organize and set up other jobs. Not sure about the ot part of the equation, if they give ot out but in so far as ot, is it better to hire another person or pay some ot if it’s only a few hours a month? Keep in mind, the city does not set the price for talent; the market does.

OP, look at what the city is paying someone. I am not sure if that is temp or full time permanent with benefits. 50 an hour is not to be sneezed at but if you try to hire that same person expect to pay 80 to 90 an hour (that 50 an hour person is costing the city 80 an hour) as any full time pro has to carry insurance and other things and consider the future. Once you come around to this, you can pick and choose but still have to be careful.

The city pays a plasterer $50 an hour and then 1.5 x overtime and all a plasterer has to do is patch up openings here and there. They don’t even have to make the openings because that’s done by a different person. Maybe City should be more efficient and stop raising our taxes.
Plasterer https://g.co/kgs/ugkpT5

Compounding: One trade. Possibly the same as a the skim coater but not necessarily
Floor repair: Another trade; either handyman or flooring person depending on how detailed the work is
Moulding: It’s very hard to find someone who will match your moulding. You can go to Dykes etc and f

This seems a bit too much for the person I was going to suggest, who mainly does decorative work. I knew a great plasterer, but he now works full time for the City. Sorry!

Thats a really fair point and Im happy to hire two different people one for each trade. Would love to develop a years long relationship with a few good people.

A person who is really good at the compound will not be really good at the wood work. And someone who is really good at wood work, will not be good at compound. Two different beasts.

There are exceptions of course but when you find the exception that person will know they are the exception and will charge their worth.

You are looking at two trades or a small crew. A carpenter who has access to a plaster person.

Every possible thing that needs to be finished in a 120 year old brownstone that is half renovated. A few examples; Compoind work around electrical sockets, making finishing pieces for gaps in old wood in the floor, repairing existing finishing pieces around old doors, skimn coating ancient decaying plaster, making/finding moulding for extremely ineven ceilings, ect ect. Also need help with work that was recently finished and needs some extra sprakle.

I might be able to recommend someone who’s worked on my house, but could you be more specific about what you need to have done?
