Grill under overhang or pergola?

We are considering putting a grill under an overhang or pergola in our backyard so we can use it if raining etc. I’m concerned about safety, high heat / soot on the ceiling. I don’t see many covered grill areas in Brooklyn……Any advice or photos if you have done this?

There are FDNY and manufacturer’s regulations on how far a grill can be situated from a structure. Start with the manufacturer.
