Good place for stone counter top in Brooklyn

Does anyone have a suggestion on a good place to find decently priced slabs of stone in Brooklyn ?

op should forget all of what has been said and get in their car and drive around one afternoon and look at what the shops have (if they are looking for remnants to install themselves). if they are looking for a particular stone that will be special ordered in a full sheet (many small shops have limited selection of full sheets in house; there is a distributor in like greenpoint or long island city or williamsburgh who has it all in house and sends it out to them), then they may want to get picky with who they use based on recommendations. it might matter for a big or complicated or special job. for a couple remnants shaped into a couple of rectangles, it won’t matter (if it is a once off order).

I would not use SMC for fabrication but they do have a large selection of stones at fairly good prices.

Ny Stone Kitchen Depot – 18 Anthony St on the Brooklyn side of the Koscuiuszko. Another low frills place with selection of remnants. They are fast (1 week for my template and install) and reasonably priced. 1/3 cost of SMC

So if I need say 5-10 sq feet of marble or granite slab, or whatever I’m not too picky on this project, who do you folks like? Superstone? I’d prefer they do the template for me, but I can do it that’s the only wa they’ll work.

i have never been to marble lite. i think they are that big place with a big yard. i was thinking they would not be too welcoming to a guy who buys one saddle every six months.

Marble Lite in Greenpoint were very slow with their communication. By the time they got back to me, I had already had the threshold made for cheaper. Can’t speak to their work.

Service can be lacking in terms of how polished their interactions with the customer are over the course of the transaction. Service can also be lacking in terms of accountability and resolution of problems when it was caused by the company. It’s not the former that concerns me as much as the latter.

just so you know, in most of the ones i go to in greenpoint, the service is lacking and the mistake i mention above happened on one of those places. there are two shops in greenpoint were the service is not lacking, one the man is reasonable and helpful and understand my frustration in the situation i mention above and wanted to help me but did not have what i needed. the other one, great service, they realized i was stuck for a particular style and realized i could not find it; a remnant that should have been 250 became 600. i don’t do that to people (if someone calls me with an emergency repair i either do not take the job or i take it and treat them like everyone else) and i was not going to let someone do that to me.

so considering some of the service issues which sound par for the course (a lot of these folks come up through trades and do not have a training that gave them a professional edge), the reason i like this area of greenpoint for stone is, there are so many shops to shop at within a 5 block area.

if op came on here and told us a little more – if he was trying to order remnants for he himself (alone or say with one person to help move) to install – or if he was trying to order larger pieces for others to move and set, i could tell him a little more. i am not a stone person but have had to learn a bit about it to order door saddles and I’ve learned what these shops need to know to fill an order and what they can do and how fast they can do it (last year i was supposed to have a saddle ready for pick up and i showed up and it was not done. i told them i had to set it that afternoon and sure enough, the guy took a piece of stone into a room and cut it right in front of me in 10 minutes; you learn a little watching other people work) (if i could recall the name of that shop i would post it because even though they did not have my stone ready when i showed up, they did the right thing while i waited and were apologetic).

Agreed that the customer service in lacking – It’s a dusty, dirty garage in gowanus. But if you’re looking for smaller slabs, it will save you money. I basically looked through their remnant pieces for something large enough and to my liking. They came to do template for the sink area and trusted my measurements for the island. My experience was good but may not be consistent with others.

Super stone has some dodgy reviews on Yelp and I remember Andes (the guy I mentioned above) had some before. He must have scrubbed them when he moved. Everyone should just be diligent. Sometimes with no frill places, the customer service can be a bit lacking.

I’ve used Abraham for fabricating small things and he follows instructions exactly. I’ve seen people get countertops but I haven’t.

I have used Andes Marble 30 Meadow St (718) 384-7947. Pedro is not the most pleasant but the work was good and reasonable. I didn’t mention him earlier because of his slightly abrasive personality. He has a decent amount of slabs and remnants but nowhere near the selection at SMC. I gave him a drawing but he ended up templating and did everything correctly. Prices were reasonable but always shop around to make sure he isn’t quoting you something ridiculous as he doesn’t strike me as the straightest shooter.

I did not have a consistently good experience with Universal Marble. A stone counter came out badly. Maryann wants to do a good job but not sure the workers care.

if you are doing like i did by myself a year or so ago (i tell you this because i am not a stone guy) and want to by a slab or two to move yourself and set them (so things like maybe 6′ x2′ long, no bigger) yourself, go to greenpoint and look at remnants. there are 5 shops east of Manhattan and south of Greenpoint ave. in and around Meserole and Henry. they will cut and shape for you.

i used to go to Oriental and i bought two pieces and told him i would be back in a few weeks for a third. this was for my house. I told him directly i would be back for more and asked what was the name of the product (the pattern/color etc) so he can identify it when i returned. he told me “don’t worry, i always have that”. when i returned he had no idea what i was talking about and could not give me the name/pattern so i could look elsewhere. since then i have gone to others up there when i need stone for saddles, etc. there is one particular other shop i real ly like but i cannot recall the name. maybe later i can post it.
