Getting rid of ants

This is our first spring in our house, and we are having an ant invasion on the parlor floor where our kitchen is. The ants are coming through cracks in the door to the deck and also through the molding around the windows in the front. Any suggestions for how to get rid of them? We’ve put down traps but those are not helping enough. We’ve got two young kids (lots of crumbs) and a cat, so that doesn’t help….

For the last number of years when we started getting ant infestations like the kind you describe, I have prepared a spray bottle filled with 25% to 35% liquid anti-bacterial soap and the rest water. I spray this directly on the ants and their pathways and it pretty much kills them on contact. The advantage to this over the Terro product is that it is less expensive and very child-safe. It works. You can also cover a lot more square footage with the spray than you can with the Terro.

We use table salt. Outside our house in the back we sprinkle table salt around the perimeter of the house. You can Google it. I think the ants can’t/don’t like to climb it.

Third recommendation for terro liquid ant baits. Have used them successfully for several years. FYI I have found the indoor baits work better than the outdoor. With kids and a cat, I suggest taping them down to the floor (otherwise the liquid can spill out and it is very sticky).

Terro products work well. I’ve used the powder outdoors and the liquid bait indoors with success

We had similar issue in our backyard kitchen door a couple of years ago. We used Diatomaceous Earth food grade and created a thin barrier line so the ants would not cross thru to the entry door. You might have to reapply after rain and high wind. Also the Terro liquid Ant Baits (indoor and outdoor) works wonder. After a week or two..the ants were gone not seen inside anymore.
