Gate under stoop

We’re looking to replace the solid door under our stoop with a decorative gate. Can someone provide a range for what we should expect to pay for this? Thanks in advance!

Roberto from puma metal just finished installing and adapting a historic under the stoop gate for me. He changed the hinges, added a new lock, shortened the height and fixed and welded a few spots that were too rusted. He came out yo give me an extremely reasonable estimate. Picked up the gate to work on it in his shop and came back pretty quick to do the install. Extremely nice crew, very professional and beautiful work

Absolutely use an antique salvaged iron gate and have the ironworker adapt it.
Ask the ironworkers first if they have any in their shop. Most contractors tend to save what may be useable for their work in a future project especially if they have the room.
I myself keep a huge inventory of architectural antiques stored upstate. It’s so nice when I can just take a ride upstate pick what I need for a restoration project and bring it back, kind of like shopping at Home Depot but in 1900!
If you’re going to strip the gate yourself take the proper precautions, it’s most likely lead paint.

Start by trying to find a gate from salvage yards. Making one from scratch will be much more expensive . These gates are often shaped and made with pins and rivets. There is a right or left side swing and are beautiful compared to new welded construction . Most any iron worker can strip and repair an original gate. I used Vinnie’s a long time ago . They were pricey but they did a great job.

SoSlope, thanks so much. That’s really helpful bc that’s exactly the scope of work needed
for me. I have to modify the top and fix the bottom while repairing some little things.
I’m planning on scraping it clean and paint it myself but that’s not that much work.
I’ll get some estimates from both Jimmy and Vinnie. They should work together, sounds like a great name for an ironworks company “Jimmy and Vinnie”

John, I found the quote. He charged $2,250 to restore and adapt the old gate to fit our needs. It was a lot of work (rebuilding the bottom and making a new top as well as stripping and painting). It was part of a much larger job and was 4 years ago, so it may be different in your case.

John, unfortunately, I don’t remember. It was a few years ago. Vinnie’s wasn’t the cheapest, but I trusted them. In retrospect, I think their work was good, but we have had some problems with the paint coming off sooner than I would have hoped. I would still consider using them again, but want to temper my recommendation slightly.

There will be a huge range depending on whether you are looking for a basic, non-decorative gate or a beautiful piece of custom iron work. If you want the latter (as we did), you can save a vast amount of money by finding a salvage piece (e.g., at the place in the Lowe’s parking lot as suggested by @cate). The salvage piece can be the wrong size (preferably larger than needed), wrong shape and in bad condition. A good iron worker (we used Vinnie’s) can take that as a starting point and not have to fabricate all the intricate work from scratch.

No idea I’m afraid but you might ask at the salvage place in Lowe’s parking lot in Gowanus to see if they have any, ever get them in, can contact you, and how much they run. A number of the ironworks in Brooklyn may be able to quote you prices for new ones also.
