Gas Line Inspection

I own and occupy my single family home. Recently National Grid came to inspect the gas connection (is this part of LL152?) and said that the gas pipe was corroded. It looks pretty rusty to me too. According to the guy, National Grid will do all the work AND pay for repairing the front brick patio that they have to rip up to replace the gas line. Supposedly, I don’t have to pay for anything. 1) Is it true that I don’t have to pay anything? and 2) our brick patio was redone 2 years ago; could National Grid, or their contractors, possibly do a good job?

I wanted to thank everyone for their help with this. National Grid came and did the work a few weeks ago. As suggested by posters we got the foreman’s name and his commitment that the pavers would be put back exactly as they were found. And they were! And when the pavers were put back with slightly the wrong pattern (I couldn’t tell, but my husband noticed) we called our contact and National Grid sent out a contractor to redo the work. It looks exactly as it did before and now we have a fresh safe gas line. Overall I was really pleased with how responsive National Grid was.

Our entire block has been having the gas lines replaced & a few houses had to have their pavers moved. We got an agreement from NG that the sidewalks & front areas would be restored to their original conditions because of a mess that had occurred on an adjoining block. Hallen & City Pavers did the work. Where they replaced cement it doesn’t match but the pavers &/or bricks look exactly like the originals. I’d ask NG about the contract.

Op, sorry i did not get here sooner but i have some comments to this:

so nat grid showed up here to look at our gas pipe and said it was ok but that they had to put a shut off valve outside and will have to rip up a sidewalk square to do so. it was a 8 year old side walk poured to a perfect 4″ which i need because people sometimes park on it.

national grid came and put their valve in and closed the sidewalk square with asphalt. when they were done doing all this work in this area, they had a contractor (a paving company) come by. the contractor had two crews, one came ahead of the other to remove the asphalt and instead of digging down to make the new square 4″ deep, they added waste dirt to make it 2″ deep and only 1 1/2″ by the valve. as soon as they left cheat a few more houses, i went to my basement to get a shovel and dig it out to 4″ deep and got sidelined by a phone call and came up and the second crew had arrived and were pouring the concrete.

i got lucky. they had more work to do in the area some months later on our street and i called the contr actor over and told him what had happen with his company and he told me his “instructions were for this and that not this unless it show damage that is their fault and if the concrete breaks i can contact national grid later”. as i went in the house to begin making phone calls, my neighbor came out with his own gripe and to shut us both up, he brought a machine over, cracked the concrete and took a photo and said it had to be fixed as the crack was national grids responsibility.

Here is how i see this going with you if you do not find a way to get them to pay your contractor. national grid might tell you one thing – “it will be as it was”. their contractor will tell you they are responsible only to a point and that point stops short of “as it was”. i might consider allowing national grid and their contractor to do this but i would get someone in management to either sign something or catch them on video stating that they will tell the contractor that those bricks have to be put back as they were and they either have to match any bricks they damage or if they cannot find a perfect match, they have to rip the entire front up and replace all the bricks with something close. keep in mind, if you are asking someone to make a verbal “contract” with you or asking them to sign something, only employees of a certain level can commit to a contract (i think a VP, others on here will know) and if the field supervisor makes the commitment, Nat grid may use it as an out.

National Grid and their contractor will finger point if you let them.

Thanks. This is all really helpful information. I would much prefer to get money from National Grid and pay a brick contractor that I trust.

Well I haven’t experienced this personally but I’ve talked to others who had that happen, and I do think you should try to pre-arrange for them to pay for the patio repair, and for you to hire someone to do it if you can. They are obligated to perform these gas line repairs, so you may have some leverage, but I don’t know how much

It’s true that you don’t have to pay for anything, however, any opening they create in the brick patio, they’ll just fill in and finish with concrete.

this is separate from LL152, which your property isn’t subject to. The utility owns the line beyond the meter so yes, they will do it without cost to you. As for the repair job… I wouldn’t feel too confident about it. Hopefully this is just the beginning of a conversation between you and the utility and there’s room for negotiation around the patio.
