Galvanized Steel Deck

I will be having a new deck installed soon. I am considering galvanized steel instead of regular steel which would rust and need to be repainted every few years. We will probably paint the galvanized deck if we go that route. Has anyone installed a galvanized deck? Or could anyone tell me their experience with ANY galvanized steel structure they have a outdoors? I am also wondering how long a painting job will last on galvanized steel if it is painted with the correct primers and paints. Any experiences you could share would be very helpful.

If you go with galvanized, make sure that it’s hot dipped. Then, consider leaving it exposed. Painting galvanized steel requires special preparation and coatings. You cannot just slather enamel on it.

Galvanized is harder to do because they have to drive the material they construct to another facility probably to NJ for the galvanization process. The reason your guy is reluctant is because the all have enough work and everything outside the norm leads to resistance and whining . Just ignore that and tell him that it’s this or nothing.

Yes I’d like to know who installed it as well. As for ——“The metal guy kind of followed my orders only half way” ……could you elaborate? Because the installer i want to use seems very reluctant to do it and seems to be discouraging me against it even though i’ll pay him more for the galvinized.

Galvanized is the best. I have a galvanized railing on my deck. The metal guy kind of followed my orders only half way.

I always wondered why it is not more common.
