Furnace flue

I have had two different companies come out to inspect my furnace flue as well as my fireplace flues, just to see if they could use cleaning or maintenance. I had all five rebuilt 20 years ago and reclined with terra cotta. It was before stainless steel was allowed. First company came out said everything was fine but that the chimneys needed some repairs. Funny as they were the company that did the original work and they look just like they left them. Said they were booked a month out to do any cleaning. So called a second company out who looked and said that they all looked very clean but the furnace flue needed to be relined with stainless steel. Gave me a price of $3000. Or $2500 if I did it today. So I did nothing…

Any idea what this usually runs? Three story brownstone… should I get a third opinion? Anyone you recommend?

Thanks

Most decent contractors of any trade are booked a month in advance. Anyone that is available right now is no body you I want working on my house!
The contractor that you say relined the flues 20 years ago and told you that they need some repairs is the one I would go with. After 20 years they probably do need some repairs, the mortar joints need pointing, the seals at the to & bottom need replacing etc.
If you have 20 year Terra cotter linings you do not need steal liners as well, any contractor that tells you that you do is taking advantage of you.

3000 is the standard for relining a brownstone flue…. but it sounds like your flues are fine. I would be reticent to go with a vendor who says he will give you a break if you do it today. Try A and A chimney or A and J chimney… I have worked with both on boiler replacements and they are really honest outfits

I used Ace Chimney in 2014 and it was $3,000 for the SS liner. That also included lowering the top two feet of a chimney that was falling over and capping it. No problems with them.

FWIW paid about $3, 000 for SS lining in my three-story house sseveral years ago, so the price seems OK assuming that you really need to have the work done. I’d hhesitate though because of thevery hard sell and get an aadditional opinion.
