Front of house cleaning etiquette / rules

Going through my first spring in the townhouse, and noticed how much dust and how many pollen pods (which I believe are the “catkins” according to google) are blanketing our stoop, sidewalk and front garden area. I finally spent an hour sweeping up and throwing this all away, and thought, there has to be a better way! Pushing it all onto the street didn’t seem right, but what is the etiquette here? To collect and dump? It felt like I could have used a leaf blower, but then the air of our block will be impacted. How clean are we supposed to keep the sidewalk (any rules, or just up to us for aesthetics?) This isn’t an access / safety issue (like snow or ice), so unsure how to approach!

Owners are responsible for the sidewalk and 18 inches from the curb into the street.
$50 fine for a first offense and $100 for all subsequent offenses.
I’ve been getting these tickets regularly as DSNY finds it easier to ticket homeowners than do street cleaning and ticketing cars.

If you are in an area with composting, this is the perfect use for those brown bins. You can’t just sweep your garden waste into the street – you must get rid of it somehow.

For some reason my front yard collects leaves and since we are near a train station and a lamp post , we must seem to be the perfect place for passers by to throw empty takeout bags and ciggie butts. Luckily we have an outlet available and when it accumulates,, clean it up with a shop vac!

My wife likes to use a rechargeable leaf blower to blow material together for pick up; I find it more trouble than it’s worth. In any case you should NEVER blow stuff into the street, or onto neighbors’ property.

You are responsible for your sidewalk and a broom length into the street. You can get fined for not keeping up on it daily. Just take a few minutes and sweep up or pickup any garbage and throw it into a black bag and call it a day.

My understanding is that building owners are responsible for both the sidewalk and even the gutter in front of their building: snow removal, litter and tree debris, sidewalk upkeep (eg. bluestone pavers, if you have them), etc. I’ve always operated under that assumption and so do my neighbors. Personally, I hate leaf blowers. They are noisy and polluting. Also, all they do is blow leaves onto someone else’s stretch of sidewalk or into the gutter where the street cleaning machines are often unsuccessful in sweeping them up. Maintaining the sidewalk is a pain. On the other hand, it’s a great way to meet your neighbors!
