fresh air intake vent exterior to boiler room
I am looking for a clarification of the Fresh Air Intake Vent rules for a 2-family house in Brooklyn.
We have a gas boiler ( 175000 btu/hr) located in a boiler room that we recently renovated and need to add a Fresh Air Intake from the exterior to the Boiler room.
Does anybody know the NY DOB rules ?
Does the duct needs to be 12*12″ ?
I read also that the diameter of the duct for a gas boiler needs to be 1 sq in per 1,000 btu – which would mean that the duct would need to 15×12″ .. it seems excessive and all the fresh air ducts that I see in front of similar houses in Brooklyn, have a duct with a much smaller diameter 6″?
Thank you for your help

It’s not 1 square inch per 1,000 BTUs. Nothing with the NYC DoB is that simple.
It’s 1 square inch per 4,000 BTUs for passive makeup air recovery with direct communication to outside air. If you use an inducer fan, you can make the duct smaller but will have to submit calculations and provide an active interlock device to shut off the appliances when the fan inevitably fails.

Usually it’s about 12″x12″ and it should not have a fan or the pressure will interfere with your boiler . There’s usually no inspection unless it’s a 3-family or bigger. If you see a 6″ gooseneck vent in front of a house that’s not a boiler vent, that’s a vent for the waste line.

I would hire someone who knows the code; you need this done right and failed inspections are coming with penalties.

I can’t speak to the specifics of your question but I will say that there are sometimes different calculations for mechanically vented (with fans) vs. non-mechanically vented (free space only). Not sure if that applies here but if it does it could explain the discrepancy you see.
