Firing Expediter Mid-Job?

I have an expediter who has been a pain generally. Rude, slow, etc. We finally got all our DOB approvals and permits pulled and start construction this week. He just sent me an invoice for $2,500 more than the contracted price (claiming that you need to add the itemized line items to the total to get double the contract price, which is absurd). I want to tell him to pound sand, but I also am worried about what he might do to me. Can he mess with my permits? I guess I’ll need to hire a new person to close out the job? Any advice? I’m worried about what problems this is going to create… Thank you!

Have you considered threatening to report him to the city for fraud if he doesn’t honor your original contract? What does your architect or engineer say, if you are working with either? Is it possible the agreed on price was a base minimum price that didn’t include standing online or other unforeseeable issues billed hourly?

The contract says X price and he wants more. Obviously it didn’t contemplate something like this. I’m a lawyer, so I’m not quite concerned with the legal ramifications– more with the practical ramifications of firing the guy and not paying him. How miserable can he make my life?

What does your contract or master services agreement say for this situation? Hopefully you signed one.
