fire-rated door - saddle won't fit

My contractor was going to install the saddle for a fire-rated door but apparently there is barely enough room for the saddle to fit under the door as it’s currently installed. The weather stripping would have to be removed and the door’s bottom edge cut down. However I’ve heard that fire-rated doors should not be modified. I’m ok with not having a saddle there, as there seems to be an airtight seal with the floor due to the weather stripping, but is this OK in terms of the inspection? What is the best solution here?

Thanks!

People have addressed this issue on here, re two family. I would check the code or search old posts.

Years ago, in commercial, certain spaces required fire rated doors but it never went to the saddles. Residential is very different and in light of what happen in the bronx a few years back, I could see why they might mandate it.

The saddle i made of metal. The door is in a two family house (which we own) and located off the common hallway but it leads into the owner’s unit living room, which has a wood floor… Currently there is no saddle at all. I was told that each unit needed a fire rated door, wondering if that is definitely true?

OK interesting what you wrote, Steve, that we could cut back the floor – although it seems like a shame to cut into the floor! Assuming that we do need a fire-rated door, I’m hoping the door will still count as fire rated even without a saddle.

Sorry, I just read that height was the issue. That is something we often worry about and considerations have to be made in the planning stages to keep this from happening. So why is a fire door needed? Is it needed or is it just that it happens to be a fire door? Is it into a common hall in a coop? Or to the outside? If it is not required where it is being installed, the absence of the saddle will not mean much.

People cut tile and wood back all the time to install saddles. It’s not difficult and any one with the right tools can have either removed in a few minutes and a new saddle set in a bed of thinset of screwed to the surface below.

What is the saddle made of and I know cutting it may void any fire protection rating but if it can be done without anyone seeing that it was trimmed, why not go ahead and do so?

I trim stone and metal saddles on site all the time and I am neither a stone nor metal worker.
