Fire extinguishers in gut renovation

Our contractor has said we should get fire extinguishers for each floor, for use in a gut renovation. Is it normal for the homeowner to provide that equipment?

“Is it normal for the homeowner to provide that equipment?“
-that feeling when you realize you chose the wrong contractor, then proceed to post on brownstoner to see if anyone thinks that is normal. Does your contractor regularly send you out for supplies to Home Depot, or do they just not believe in safety in general?

i’m genuinely interested to know if you picked the lowest cost bid. And im dying to know which contractor …… it does give the vibe that they will be hitting you up for more money before the project is over. been there done that. good luck, hope it is not an ominous sign.

Little ones cost $20 or so; big ones are $120 and up. Times 3 for the 3 floors.

it’s not a “should” for a job like that, it’s a requirement and it should absolutely be the responsibility of the contractor. the contractor is responsible for site safety and fire extinguishers are part of that (other items include protection around holes, temporary stairs, Covid signage, etc.). Failure to comply with site safety supervision and physical requirements can result in a stop work order.

I am a contractor. When I have done things where I think one is needed, i bring my own shop sized extinguishers. Why would i rely on my customers safety equipment to stop a problem that could result in a very large insurance claim against me?

They cost like $20 at home depot, doesn’t seem like it’s worth a fight
