Fios and the pole needed
Verizon Fios came by the other day. asking if we are willing to have a pole in our backyard to accept wiring for Fios. Seems a lot of neighbors are denying access, which is “impeding the installation.” There is a pole right behind us, the elderly woman refuses to allow access, or have the old wooden pole removed and a new one (to accommodate Fios). My partner is adamantly against the pole in our backyard, he feels this will create issues with allowing workers trudge thru the house, and he’s wondering, “what’s in it for us?” We don’t even have cable, and have made peace with Time Warner.
Any thoughts on allowing the pole?
peaceout

well i’m someone who has the pole in my backyard and i have to say it’s a pain in the neck. every few months they come knocking on my door asking for access for one of my neighbors and in the past i didnt want to be a jerk but then this guy is trudging through my house…then i have to let him back out…and one time one of them went rifling through my shed for a ladder! no more! after complaining to fios (and im a customer!!!) asking for a little something they refused. so i told them i wouldnt allow access anymore.
dont do it unless youre getting something in return fr the headache.

I guess we were lucky on our block where the owner of a house off of Bedford Ave. allowed access to the back yards.

To be clear – the trench was dug in the street from a corner intersection up to the insertion point mid-block when it angled off to go under the pavement, through the front area, etc.

No, Bob. The building I talked about is mid-block & they also had to dig a trench from the corner to lay new cables before veering off to go through the building.

The concerns Arkady raises are probably only significant for corner buildings. If the OP is mid-block that shouldn’t be a problem.
BTW, in my first reply I assumed, perhaps wrongly, that the OP’s area had the same lack of broad-band availability as we had in Lefferts Manor, with cable not being an option. IF the OP has simply not opted for cable, even though it’s available, they might not be interested in FiOS either. IF my block had cable and I was satisfied with it (problematic, from some of the stories I’ve heard about Cablevision) I might NOT have opted for a FiOS installation (which took >8 hours) .
FiOS has been excellent so far, but course anything would be superior to the VERY costly combination of separately billed DirecTV (fine, in and of itself) , an AT&T MiFi hotspot (OK, except for monthly data limits), and a copper wire landline, with vulnerable wires strung on back fences.

I wouldn’t be as concerned about the pole as I would be about how they plan to get the cables from the street to the pole. A friend of mine allowed it because his building is more a warehouse than residential. They had to dig the front area, run conduit through the basement & then up the wall & through to the exterior & on out to the pole. Their workers were good & the remediation they did on the excavations, etc. were well executed. They don’t really give “deals” – the best you can expect would be a reduced monthly fee for the first year’s subscription to Fios.

We have a TWC/Verizon poll in our yard (been in the house 6 years) and I think they’ve asked to access it (at least while I was home) for someone else maybe once or twice. If we have issues, access is of course easy. Fios sent someone by to get my contact info so they can access the pole once then get to our block and I happily gave it. TWC and Cablevision need some competition (it’s already allowed us to get an $80 reduction in our TWC bill).
I put a lot of work into our garden and to keep it safer from any visits, I just put some small pavers through to the poll, which are also nice for me to use.

Given the rave FiOS review above, maybe ask for free internet in exchange?

My next door neighbor was one of eight people who allowed a pole for FiOS (in the back yards between the south side of Maple II and the north side of Midwood II, in PLG. The fiberglass poles are modular and Verizon brought them in from the avenues, over the back fences. I watched part of the installation–it was done quickly and neatly.
I thought it was only Lefferts Manor that didn’t have cable (in the blocks that lacked the old wooden poles), but Cablevision has the franchise in our neighborhood so you’re obviously located elsewhere. We had FiOS installed about ten days ago and like it a lot. The TV is roughly equivalent to DirecTV (which was our only previous alternative), but the internet is considerably faster than the AT&T hot spot I used for the last couple of years (which was pretty good, but limited to 20Gigs/month) and VASTLY better than the slow and unreliable DSL I used earlier. IMO FiOS is worth the hassle. Good luck in getting permission for enough poles on your block; the alternative, fiber optic lines on the backs of houses, requires approval by almost ALL the neighbors (Verizon CAN run cable from both ends of the block and skip a single hold-out) and is VERY difficult.
