Are you in a wood frame house with vinyl or metal siding? Of course you can redo it in brick veneer and if done properly hopefully shouldn’t cause problems (such as leaks, bulging, etc.) though it will never look completely like an original brick building (for example, the veneer wraps around the window sills like PermaStone). We’re currently redoing our wood frame with cement fiber siding (brand name is Hardie), which is very long lasting. If you use the pre-colored siding and trim from the factory, you never need paint it. (You might occasionally have to caulk the trim joints). The pre-colored siding comes in a range of colors; the trim comes only in white. If you want a different color for the trim, you paint it on site (and that does have to be painted every so often). WIth Hardie, you can go with a modern look or something more historical, according to your preferences. When you interview architects, ask to see drawings they have done for wood frame exterior renovations and view the properties in person to see if you like the result. If you are looking for somethin g historic, you’ll want to find an architect with knowledge of off the shelf repro parts and the ability to render authentic looking historic details (typically based on your 1940 tax photo and recent photos you take of nearby similar houses with existing original detail).
