Exchanging riser cable from main electrical panel
Has anyone had experience with exchanging the riser cable from 150-amp to 200-amp from the basement main panel to the upstair’s duplex apartment in a two-family. How extensive of a job would it be and what are the costs to be expected? Appreciate possible input.

Yes, stickerhappy. Two new risers a 100 amps to each apartment. The electrician charged $ 2 K for labor and material and patch-up. I painted.

Did you ever get this work done to go from 60 to 100 amps, what did it cost?

Hi GreenThinker and stevecym, thanks for the response. I got the numbers wrong. He is upping it from 60 amps to 100 amps. I suppose that makes sense.

green thinker is right, unless you are putting something in like a roof top hot tub or a hydroponic grow operation, 200 is a lot for a duplex. i have 100 in my house and have a shop and with no need for all the current at any one time, i am considering a sub panel to maybe gain a breaker slot or two. we find ourselves in this situation because we added dedicated lines for a dishwasher, washer/dryer, frig and will soon put the micro on a dedicated (so i can get the electric tea pot on its own line). we even have three dedicated window a/c lines – all on dedicated circuits. if it wasn’t for a 40 amp arc welder and a dedicated line for an air compressor, none of this would be an issue in the 100 amp box. nothing is ever on all at once so bigger wire might not be an issue, just space in the box. talk to an electrician about a sub panel if you need space.
also, some box manufacturers now make tandem circuits for their boxes. i think it puts two circuits on one pole. unfortunately my box is a GE and even thought they make slim circuits, they do not make tandem.

Very unlikely you actually need the extra 50 amps. Even if everything is electric from the heating/cooling/stove, there will never at one time be enough of an amperage draw to warrant a whole cable replacement.
