Ethernet Cable Installer

I’m currently renovating my two-family home, and since the walls are now open, I’d like to put in ethernet cables and ports throughout the building. I can have my general contractor run all of the cables, but I’d like to find someone that I can hire to put in the ethernet ports, advise about the overall design and answer some basic questions like whether I can daisy chain any of the ethernet cables. Does anyone have anyone they can recommend that can help me with this?

Most residential Ethernet (cat 6 etc) doesn’t use shielded cable and therefore doesn’t require grounding. This is one of the advantages of this type of cable, it’s very simple to install.

Other types of low voltage wiring or equipment may, and in this case the advice about a low voltage grounding bus is a good idea. But it may not be applicable for a simple installation of Ethernet.

i was speaking to the electrician tonight about another matter that is mentioned on this board and we got to talking about grounding. we were talking about grounding busses (in general, where they have a buss for multiple service panels in a house). he told me the electrician should now provide a separate ground buss for all of these other things (the low voltage stuff) that the low voltage technicians can ground their stuff to. that grounding bus is then connected to the house grounding system (by the regular electrician). this way the low voltage techs do not have to open panels to look for a place to ground.

i haven’t used any but i see these guys around frequently that do low voltage cable installing. not sure if you need structured wiring scheme for whole house A/V, alarm, intercom, internet but they are out there. Google low voltage cable installers, or A/V installers, i think there are even a bunch on thumbtack.

You can put the ports in yourself. Years ago, a customer of mine wanted me to run this stuff in their house. I knew nothing about it. I went to an electrician i know and he spent an hour with me and that was it. Getting the wires in the correct and same order throughout the job is key but the test equipment is designed to spot flaws.

In his own house, the electrician did what colonial mentions – a home run to a box. Technically, according to my electrician, that box gets grounded to the house system and because of that this becomes an electricians job. I can find a way around that and ground elsewhere.

I think i still have all of my equipment for this here. I am currently running a wood finishing class. If anyone wanted to learn how to make and test the connections, I can teach them at my hourly rate at my location. If i can do this, so can you.

I can also test these connections during home inspections.

Your electrician should be able to do this. I’d recommend terminating all lines for each unit into a “home run” box like a Structured Media Panel. You can have flexible conduit run to each box from the exterior of the building to enable Verizon/Spectrum/Optimum to make their pulls. I’d recommend at least one cat6 and coax port per room, with cat6 in a few closets as well for wireless access points.
