Estate Liquidation

Selling my parents townhouse in Park Slope and need to find someone to help to sell all furniture and stuff.
Can anyone recommend a company to do sell all the contents in the house?

Park Slope is the sort of place one could actually do a successful sale oneself, given its culture of stoop sales. I was always amazed at how much I could make having one, selling stuff I never thought would sell. I’d bring people inside to let them see some larger stuff that hadn’t been carried out; even let some try on clothing in the bathroom and look at them in a mirror. This was in pre-craigslist days – later, I’d sell bigger furniture on craigslist to people who were looking for that specific thing; people seem to like FB Marketplace now, though I’m barely a facebook user, so I have no experience with it.

Of course, not everyone wants the emotional burden of selling their parents’ stuff, and haggling over prices themselves – they’d rather pay someone to do that. And you’d need a lot of friends around to help out and watch out while the sale was going on. Afterward, I’d load up everything that didn’t sell in a car to take somewhere to donate, take my friends who helped out with the sale out to lunch with the proceeds, and still have enough left over to pay my movers if I was moving within the city.

Things may be different in the Covid era – but I think the people who like to shop stoop and estate sales are probably out there, in masks, in droves, doing it still. The ones who don’t wander in to browse because they happen to be walking by, but who come specifically to be there, tend to be kind of intense – they even show up early, before the advertised sale time, for first dibs.

Not sure if these sales are in full swing due to covid but maybe go to some and see what you think of the sellers and also the clientele. You will see that there are differences.

Lucky rabbit I think was a firm centered more on the homes of professionals. I think.

There are also some companies to stay away from. Do your background checks. Get the names of the principals and run them. I say this because there is a firm on li you need to stay away from. If you run his (yes, a he) name, you will see why.

Are we done, I go to their sales on li and I like diane, the owner. A lot of the used tools and tooling I have for my business comes from sales of theirs. They did do a sale here by me in 11379 so i suppose they come to the city, but i see them as a tad more suburban and leaning less toward the kinds of things people have in brownstones. Their customer base is solidly guys looking for “man” stuff.

Their is another company who seem to do more sales in this setting but I cannot recall their name. It’s a company doing sales more in north shore communities. The name will come to me.

I would rather see OP do the sale themselves. I used to go these things in the 1980s looking for tools, before these estate sale companies got involved and liked it better: there was no middle person to pay so the seller could sell for less and the buyer got a deal. These companies have taken the fun out of it and the person I want to post the name of, because of her prices , I will not even go to her sales anymore. That does not mean op should not consider them when I get their name.
