Epoxy Wood Fillers (Abtron, Git Rot, Wood Sculp, etc)??????
i have questions about these epoxy wood fillers and consolidents and hoping the wider community can help. i have never used these outside as we look at them with suspicion (they have not been around that long and the fear is the wood may move and moisture may get trapped causing damage to the bond or rot over time). is there anyone on here who has used these outside, in the elements, say 15 or twenty years ago and how is that holding up. i will be properly priming and painting the area.
what i am trying to do is repair and stabilize some large trim with cracking and soft, dry wood on an extended door jamb. we have been taught to do this in other ways and if anyone is curious, i will tell. on doors we cut and replace wood or reface.
(and i am not talking about polyester resin or the minwax “wood filler” which are basically “bondo”. these things have no place in a wood shop).

bob, your reply leaves me open to so many comebacks that i am spoiled for choice.
i have not tested it. i should go rip a piece of wood out of the trim on my shed and use it and look at it in 10 years. but in 10 years i will be how old?

But Steve-you’ve written elsewhere that you’re reluctant to use new, untested, products, so being around for generations is hardly an argument against a product that I’d expect from you.

And bob. I have found dunhams in doors and i seem to recall using it to fill some holes left by lighting we removed on a walkbridge across a salt marsh (read severe elements) and i think it worked fine (the bridge has probably fallen into the marsh but the dunhams is still there). The problem is i am used to paying the maximum amount of money for exterior adhesives and finishes and cannot get my head around using something that has been around since the model a ford and costs 3.99 for a

Ok, i am doing this for customers. I was taught to cut and replace wood with wood. What i am worried about is the wood moving and with years of moisture moving around anyway, i am worried about it popping any of the above out. The epoxy is a new process, in my lifetime. I do not trust the marketing.
Bondo has no place in a wood shop. With cars, before they had bondo, they melted lead in. I still see the sticks for sale. Resto folks use it. If you want to go crazy, see if you can use lead in the iron.

An architect I know recently specified bondo for outdoor repair of cast iron eyebrow lintels nearby. Will it hold up? He seemed to think it would. I’ll let you know in 10 years.

If the epoxy needs to be painted to hold up outdoors why not use cheap Durham’s water putty, which is cement-based, easy to work with, and also suitable for outdoor use IF painted. ?

Thank you for this. I will read about it but it is probably not unlike the other epoxy systems we use. But i do need to hear “10 years” as i have not yet used epoxies in lieu of wood outside.
Thank you.

I have had excellent experience with this: http://www.advancedrepair.com/architectural_epoxy_intro.html
I first saw it on This Old House. It is easy to work with and delivers great results. A few caveats: I have not seen it perform for 15 years (but probably for at least 10). It is great outside, but does need to be painted since UV can break it down. It is not cheap. I *strongly* suggest that you invest in the dual cartridge gun with static mixing nozzles (Starter kit 103) since it makes it infinitely easier to use. (the two parts mix automatically and just come out of the nozzle ready to use; you can save unused material in the tubes). Finally you need to grind away all the damaged wood back to solid wood. A dremel works well (and is one of those tools that you will wonder how you lived without it).
