Entry Doors for BK Townhouse

Hi Forum,

Longtime reader, first time poster. I recently purchased a 1901 brick townhouse in Brooklyn. During the walk throughs and inspections we noted the original entry doors were in PRISTINE condition, lying on their side in the basement and told the selling broker we wanted them and intended to reinstall them. To my surprise they were gone on the day of the final walk through. The past owner has been unhelpful in helping m me locate the original doors and I am crushed. I do not have the budget for a lux set of newly fabricated doors. Does anyone have a good lead on where I could find a set of old entry doors at a reasonable price?

You might want to check out architectural salvage yards or places like Olde Good Things, they often have vintage doors at reasonable prices. Also, keep an eye on local classifieds and online marketplaces like Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace.

i have a couple of pair in storage in zip 11379. these are not the average 90″ tall doors but one pair might be 110″ and the other 120″. they are tall and were used in installations where there was no transom up above. width would still be about 52″ i believe for both. these are somewhat better or more elaborate doors.

i would take $500 a pair. i might even donate some of that price to Habitat for Humanity. I cannot deliver for that price.

any doors you find are going to need work. the doors that were removed would have needed work. this work can hit 10k for a pair of simple doors with minor work and a good paint job on the extended jamb to 15k or more for work on elaborate doors with extensive work on the frame. it was not quite this way pre covid.

another place to look would be Demolition Depot in Northern Manhattan. they moved to 126 st but when they were on 125 st, they had an entire second floor of doors standing up.

Did you specify in the contract the doors would remain with the house? Are you certain they were original to the house and not a salvage pair the owners bought and were unable to use? In any case, you can search salvage places in person and online for doors of a similar era, style, and measurements. If you move quickly enough, you may find your own pair at a local salvage yard such as in the Lowe’s parking lot, Big Reuse, or Olde Good Things. Your neighbors in identical houses are another good resource. Please be advised, rehabilitating the doors, installing them, adjusting them, and preparing the surround will also not be inexpensive, but it will likely be about half the cost of fabricating new ones.
